Take a ferry from Rockland to one of 3 nearby islands. Ride is a little over 1 hour to either North Haven or Vinalhaven. Leave time for parking, if it's full there is overflow parking at the high school. Check out www.mainedot.gov for more info.

Take the ferry out of Rockland to the island of Vinalhaven for a day, park the car and walk or bring a bike to the island, just the ride out and back is worth it for the views, unless it's thickafog. Vinalhaven is a small fishing community, with a lovely coastal hiking trail, a couple of art galleries and smells like the coast of Maine. If you happen to catch the 4th of July parade and white elephant sale - you can say you did. You'll never forget it. North Haven is also accessed from this ferry. Also a fishing community.
