This is a very old volcano. See what remains and what is also new here. There are herds of elk in the valley and views that go on forever. www.nps.gov/vall/index.htm

If you see one thing before leaving northern NM, make it this.

About 1.25 million years ago, a volcanic eruption created the 13-mile wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and embraces a rich ranching history.

A 13.7-mile wide extinct volcanic crater that lies atop a dormant supervolcano. Visitors enjoy the mountain meadows, streams, and wildlife. The area offers a range of activities from camping, to hiking, fishing, horseback riding, exploring historic cabins and prehistoric sites, mountain biking, ranger-led activities, and more. www.nps.gov/vall/index.htm

if you watched Longmire, this is where it was filmed and you can walk to see it. Beautiful iconic area as well. The drive there is spectacular.
