Completed in 1893, Yakhyeon Church was the first Catholic Church to be ever built in Korea. After decades of prosecution, Emperor Gojong finally allowed Christianity in 1886 after signing Traite d'Amitie et de Commerce Entre la France et la Coree with France. It was spearheaded by French Priest E. G. Coste and being one of the first western-style building was a point of interest for people in late Chosun Dynasty.
