Kaumana cave was formed during the 1881 eruption. The lava flow traveled over 25 miles, stopping just short of Hilo Bay. The cave is nearly 2 miles long and can provide hours of up-close-and-personal spelunking. Bring along a good flashlight and extra batteries. You can’t get lost but you can get hurt stumbling around in the dark. Hwy 200 (Saddle Road) 4 miles west of Hilo.

Trailhead: From Hilo, follow Hwy. 200, the Saddle Road, to the west. Locate Kaumana Caves State Park between the 4 and 5 mile markers (right after 4 mm). The parking area is on the south side of the road, but the park is on the north side. Weather Gear: Wear sturdy shoes. Bring a flashlight. View fullsize MAP Hike: Carefully cross Hwy. 200 (Kaumana Dr.) and simply descend the steep metal staircase into the collapsed skylight of the lava tube. You can explore a short way in both directions before the lava tube enters private property. Bring a flashlight if you intend to travel beyond the cave .

Such a beautiful cave to check out! Bring some snacks for the chickens :) I have some rooster feed out back if you want to take some with you :)
A fun cave system to visit in Hilo. You can explore for 10 minutes or 5 hours.
A dazzling natural wonder, the Kaumana Caves are part of a 25-mile-long lava tube winding through the slopes of Mauna Loa. The section of the caves open to the public stretches for approximately 2 miles. Many areas near the entrance are lit by sunlight, but the cave is damp, cool and often muddy, with lots of vines, ferns and roots hanging down from the entranceway and ceiling. Visitors can observe a wide variety of lava formations. Admission is free but make sure to bring flashlights, extra batteries, a light jacket and good hiking shoes.
