The National Zoo and Aquarium is a privately owned 19-hectare (47-acre) zoo and aquarium in the Australian capital city of Canberra. It is located in Yarralumla at the western end of Lake Burley Griffin, next to Scrivener Dam. It recently had a major expansion, with 12 ha (30 acres) of open range exhibits opened in May 2017.
The zoo is privately own and has a great range of animals and animal encounters (we did the cheetah one which was fantastic). The aquarium is a hit too and so is the updated playground! You can bring your own food in and use the BBQ areas.
Canberra is home to Australia’s only combined zoo and aquarium facility, and as you’d expect from a zoo located in a national capital city, the National Zoo & Aquarium has gone to great efforts to do the country proud. The ZooVenture tours are particularly fun: you can feed a bear, pat a rhino, hand-feed a giraffe and much more in this 2-hour behind-the-scenes look at the zoo. At only $125, it’s excellent value and an experience to remember. The facility is also home to a luxury safari lodge, Jamala Wildlife Lodge, which offers deluxe accommodation and special safari itineraries for visitors, from one to three nights of exotic, exciting entertainment.
