Bussana Vecchia is a former ghost town in Liguria. Abandoned due to an earthquake in 1887, it was renovated and repopulated by an international community of artists in the early 1960s by ceramist Clizia, painter Vanni Giuffrè and poet Giovanni Fronte.
Bussana Vecchia is a hilly fraction of the municipality of Sanremo. The violent earthquake of 23 February 1887 semi-destroyed the town so much that it was completely evacuated by the inhabitants who moved about three kilometers further downstream, founding the town of Bussana Nuova. Totally abandoned for decades, it began to be inhabited again at the end of the fifties of the twentieth century by Italian and foreign artists, attracted by the particularity of the place, who renovated and made the less damaged buildings habitable again. It hosts an international community of artists, with artisan shops and some refreshment points, so much so that over the years it has become a characteristic "artists' village" in a medieval village setting.
