Providing the perfect backdrop for exercise and adventure, the Pondhawk Natural Area not only protects 79 acres of scrub habitats and wetlands, but is also home to some of the tallest pond apple trees in Florida. The natural area contains five native Florida ecosystems: scrub, scrubby flatwoods, mesic flatwoods, hydric hammock, and sawgrass slough. Blessed with an abundance of sunshine and foliage, two natural surface paths provide more than 2 miles of hiking within the preserve, which adjoins the Spanish River Library.
