This 13th century building has been a meeting point in Bologna for centuries. Be sure to visit the 'whispering gallery' and look for the wooden supports on the ceiling where public hangings were carried out on market days in the distant past.

the arcade below the building has an outstanding acoustic effect, allowing to speak, even at low voice, from the four opposite corners of the vault itself. try it out, it's incredible.

The edifice was built around 1200 as the seat of the local podestà, the various functionaries of the commune. It stands on the Piazza Maggiore, near the Palazzo Comunale and facing the Basilica of San Petronio.

Under the vault of the Podestà (a bit macabre curiosity: hangings took place in the vault, you can still see the wooden beams on which the ropes were fixed), if you position yourself on opposite sides of the arches with another person, you will be amazed that, speaking facing the wall, it will be possible to hear each other clearly.

L'edificio attuale è la ricostruzione quattrocentesca dell'antico palazzo duecentesco. Progettato da Aristotele Fioravanti, fu realizzato in arenaria nel 1483. La torre medievale è opera di mastro Alberto, ed è un vero capolavoro di ingegneria, in quanto non poggia a terra ma sui pilastri del voltone del Podestà. Nel 1525 vengono aggiunte le statue in terracotta dei protettori della città: i santi Petronio, Procolo, Domenico e Francesco. Il palazzo è visitabile solo in occasione di mostre ed eventi.
