Julia Margaret Cameron (1815 – 1879) was one of the most important early photographers and now recognised worldwide as a pioneer of photography as art. Ahead of her time, she was ambitious and freethinking when most Victorian women were passive and demure. She took on the challenges of handling large cameras and dangerous chemicals at a time when photography was known as ‘The Black Art’. Today she is credited with creating the first photographic close-up portraits and influencing the subsequent Pictorialism movement with her use of diffused focus. Her portraits of ‘famous men and fair women’, reflect her time within the Freshwater Circle, which included Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Lewis Carroll, and the birth of celebrity.

Dimbola Lodge (10 min drive) nearby is the former home of Julia Margaret Cameron, Tennyson’s friend and one of the most important figures in British photographic history. Dimbola is now a museum of her stunning wet collodion portraits. Her subjects include Charles Darwin, Alice Liddell (arguably the ‘Alice’ from Adventures in Wonderland), Dame Ellen Terry, Anthony Trollop, astronomer Sir John Herschel, and of course Tennyson himself (as well as staged mythical scenes from his poetry). There is a ‘play’ Victorian portrait studio with a lot of period dressing up clothes to keep the kids occupied, as well as an old plate camera on a tripod. There’s usually other exhibitions on too, including a permanent exhibition of prints from the famous Isle of Wight festivals (’69-’70).
