The Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1593-1596 to the designs of Giovanni Battista Cairati to protect the port of Mombasa, It is one of the most outstanding and well preserved examples of 16th Portuguese military fortification and a landmark in history.

It was occupied by the Omani Arabs and British over the years. The entrance fee is $2. There are guides outside the museum that can show you around. You get to tip them after the tour.
