Great value – and very authentic – Indian place. Lots of great dishes on offer, our top tip is one of the Thali dishes for a little mix of everything.

“Princess Diana Local Pizzeria” it says on the front steps, though it could just as easily and truthfully say “Kensington children’s favourite restaurant and party venue”. (Note: Well, when I was a child, anyway! Hardly a month went by without someone in my class having a party here – in the special venue room – or being taken here for a treat.) Great local pizzeria, there’s plenty of tasty pasta dishes and more besides on the menu.

In two excellent locations in Kensington and Chelsea, the Aubaine restaurants are a perfect venue for dining throughout the day, be it quick and tasty lunch or long, lingering dinner at which you can also take advantage of their extensive wine list and fabulous cocktails. The restaurants are also a great choice for afternoons because of their famous patisserie offering; the Brompton Cross venue (which features a wonderful outdoor terrace) also has a selection of boulangerie for customers to take away.

Cupcakes have had their day, now it's time for brownies and blondies (white chocolate brownies). At the Brownie Box, run by sisters Niki and Kristi, they specialise in these cuboid treats, but they also make cakes, muffins and even the odd cupcake.

The speakeasy trend reaches its apogee/nadir, depending on your taste, with this new basement bar accessed off Earl’s Court Road. ‘At all times do not draw unwanted attention to our venue,’ beseeches the menu. Oh, sorry. It makes a big noise about being secretive – I evaded an intercom interrogation by sneaking in behind a group of fellow drinkers. A dapper chap behind a desk then kept the schtick going: ‘Under what name did you book your appointment?’ And, ‘Can you tell me something about your case?’ How far you take the pantomime is up to you; once inside, Evans & Peel becomes a normal bar – a normal bar for 2012, that is, with bare brick walls, white butcher’s tiles and filament bulbs.

It’s not just because this elegant palace is located in Kensington Gardens, on the trendiest fringes of west London, that this royal residence has a certain chic style. It played host to the most fashionable salons in Georgian times, plus it was home to Queen Victoria in her youth, then to sassy Princess Margaret and then to classy Princess Diana. Now William and Kate live in apartments at the rear, while the main palace is a pretty visitor attraction, with tranquil gardens to wander.

Many of London’s best museums are free to visit, making what they show just that little bit more awesome – but also very busy. Go off peak and try the hands-on experiments to understand more about the scientific world (there are specially dedicated zones to suit children of different age groups) or simply gaze on examples of incredible technology, from early computers to space hardware.

Sightseeing

Any self-respecting fashionista knows that what goes around comes around, so browsing centuries of textiles and design at the Victoria & Albert museum is an education in style that is still very relevant today. After the landmark ‘David Bowie is...’ exhibition, a new crowd has appreciated the depth of the V&A’s collection. It continues to fire creative minds with collections of clothes, china, jewellery, glass, photography, architectural drawings and art.

Built by Queen Victoria for the purposes of entertainment and enlightenment and named in honour of her dear husband, the RAH still has a magic to it, and not just when the whole place shakes to a Proms chorus of ‘Land Of Hope and Glory’. The plush curtains and balconies retain Victorian opulence and swiveling seats mean you get a great view of the stage wherever you sit.
