Castillo de la Isla de Trakai

Trakai Island Castle (Lithuanian: Trakų salos pilis) is an island castle located in Trakai, Lithuania on an island in Lake Galvė. The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century by Kęstutis, and around 1409 major works were completed by his son Vytautas the Great, who died in this castle in 1430. Trakai was one of the main centres of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance.

Devil’s Pit is the most famous and visited natural monument in the park. It is a mythological – sacral object of cultural heritage. The pit is of a regular funnel shape, 40 meters in depth (the layer of the pit at the bottom is 9.5 meters), 210 meters in width at the top and 63 m at the bottom. The Devil’s Pit was first mentioned in historical sources in 1666, when nobleman J. Ruževičius transferred the land where the pit was to Aukštadvaris Dominican monks. A legend says that a long time ago there was a high hill with a church on the top of it. After the priest illegally blessed the marriage of a young girl and a man who had made marriage wows before, the church disappeared. Honorable people can still hear the sound of bells coming from the bottom of the pit. Another legend also relates the origin of the pit with a church and devils. According to it, an old devil was carrying a stone to break Aukštadvaris church, but as the cock crowed, the stone fell from the devil s hands next to the pit, where it is still standing. Here, at midnight, devils would come and feast, therefore nobody had the courage to pass the pit after dark.
