Honokowai is a great little neighborhood just north of Lahaina and Kaanapali. It's a place where neaighbors wave walking by and people know each other. It is a mix of working residential and vacation rentals sitting along the northwest coast of Maui.
The Farmers Market is just north and across the street from Maui Sands. They are a vegetarian market that features local organic produce. They have a great deli, and make great acai bowls!

Dukes is just south of Maui Sands at Honua Kai Resort. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the food is usually excellent. They normally have live Hawaiian music at dinner, make reservations for dinner.

If you are in the market for a sharks tooth, fossils, a hand carved fish Hawaiian fish hook, or even WWII issue Hawaiian currency, this is your store. The staff is very knowledgeable about the ocean and Hawaiian culture. This is one of the oldest stores on Front Street and a must visit.

The top of the Island of Maui is the Haleakala volcano. The view from the top is like standing on top of the world. We recommend visiting for either sunrise or sunset.
For sunrise you will need to make reservations in advance with the park service, https://www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm. You should make your reservations asap.
For sunset, reservations are not necessary, but plan on spending some time star gazing WOW!

Spectacular white sand beach! Great for body boarding! Caution, this beach can have some pretty big waves. Keep ocean shore safety in mind here. Never turn your back to the water.

If you are making a trip out to Hana a part of your stay, do not miss this beach! Small and tucked away, you will have to navigate some steps to get down to the beach, but this is a very sweet little beach. Great for body boarding and snorkeling.

What can I say? If you are a family and staying more than a week, a trip to the Costco store (right on the way from the airport is a good idea. Groceries are generally more expensive here than the mainland.
Gas here is about $1+ per gallon less expensive than anywhere else on the island. So if you have a Costco card, stop here for gas before returning your rental car.
