Sightseeing

In the busy season it's best to get a jump on traffic and leave before 9:30am. There are plenty of paid parking options and if you want to go onto the beach we recommend driving to the left (East) of Center street. If you find a free spot on the street make sure all your tires are completely off of the road or you will be ticketed. If you decide to go to the (west) of Center Street we recommend you drive all the way Down Ashley Avenue to the County Park.

A lighthouse surrounded by water! The barrier island called Morris Island shifted and left the light house surrounded by the ocean. It is a fun walk to the lighthouse. Drive to Folly Beach, turn left on Ashley Avenue and drive to the end of the island, park and walk on the paved road to thend where there is a beach trail to see the light house. Do not swim in those waters because of strong currents. You can walk all the way to the east end of the island and watch the dolphins. In the Fall, you can watch dolphins corral fish onto the shore, it is really cool.

Historic Downtown Charleston is like no other City in the Country! Park at one of the many parking garages and set out on foot on any of the scenic historic streets! The parking garage closest to Rainbow Row would be the East Bay Parking garage. Or get started at the Charleston Visitor Center to arrange any tour you would like.

The grounds of Boone Hall Plantation are absolutely breathtaking. I recommend doing the little trolly ride. The house tour is decent; you are kind of herded around and can’t touch anything, so not that fun if you tend to get claustrophobic. Definitely take the time to visit the old slave cabins for some perspective. This part is self-guided, so you can take as much time as you need.

Magnolia Plantation has the most beautiful sprawling gardens. This is definitely an all-day trip. Carve out enough time to relax and unwind and find a secret garden to spend the day. They have a little café there, but the food isn’t that great. I recommend packing a little snack, or light lunch, and bring plenty of water.

The Charleston Tea Plantation is a great place to visit. Wadmalaw is such a beautiful island and only a 30-minute drive from the house. I recommend spending a whole day out there. Visit the Angel Oak tree and then drive to the Tea Plantation. On your way back, visit Joseph Fields Farm to visit a Gullah Farm with lots of produce. They have cold drinks and I am sure some fresh fruit or vegetables for your snacking.

I recommend visiting this beautiful angel oak tree, it is thought be one of the oldest trees and living things east of the Mississippi River. It is a breathtaking tree, definitely worth visiting. The cute little shop has nice images of the angel oak tree that you can purchase as a souvenir.

This is such a beautiful park to visit that is only 10 minutes from the house. The Charleston County Park system is nationally renowned. I recommend visiting ccprc.com for all of county parks because they all offer something different but James Island County Park is one of the best. In the summer, there is a fun water park, the splash zone. I HIGHLY recommend visiting the fishing dock for an all-time view of the low country. There are trails there, rock climbing walls, kayak rentals, etc. Great place for the adventurous spirit.

Other Beaches

Isle of Palm’s is a great beach to go beachcombing. If you go during low tide, you may be lucky enough to find a starfish. This beach doesn’t undergo beach renourishment, so the sea life is more vibrant and healthier than Folly Beach. The downside to Isle of Palm’s is the parking. It is hard to find parking, but if you go early enough, you can park at the Isle of Palm’s County Park for a small fee.

Sullivan’s Island is about a 30-minute drive from the house, but if you like wide beautiful beaches and don’t care about waves, this may be the beach for you. The town is a little more modern than Folly, not as much of a surfer/cool vibe, this beach has a more family vibe.

Adventure Tours/Activities

If you like kayaking or getting out on the water, check out Charleston Outdoor Adventures, they are located really close to the cottage on Bowen’s Island. The views are breathtaking and you can kayak with dolphins. I recommend going really early in the morning or late in the evening. You don’t want to be out there at noon.

Farmer's Markets

The downtown Charleston Farmer's Market is epic! The downtown famers market, is on Saturdays from 8am – 2pm, from April 9th-Novemeber 26th. It is busy, hustle and bustle, but well worth a visit for either a special gift or some fresh produce.

By far, my favorite farmer’s market is the Sunday Brunch Market at the Pourhouse Bar. 1977 Maybank Highway, Charleston, 29412, this market is outside from 11am-3pm. There is live music, a lot of great vendors, and always a good vibe. This market is year-round on Sunday.

The live music vortex of James Island! This is a local bar with an awesome outside seating area and an inside venue. There is ALWAYS awesome local music from 6pm-8pm on the outside deck and then bigger acts in the late evening in the inside. If you want a nice cold beer and love live music, this is the place to visit. They have food truck and the attached restaurant called Kwei Fei is has amazing Sichuan cuisine.
