Note that due to current ongoing renovations, the actual light house is closed to the climbers. But nonetheless, it is always a fun adventure and boat ride. After the storms, be sure to bring your shell buckets, because that's when you are likely to find the rarest and best sea treasures. Definitely stop in the light keeper’s house museum!
* Rent 4x4 at the light house (seats four) travel to the point or the old fishing village
OR hitch a ride out there by jumping in the back of a farm truck that leaves every hour from the gift shop & bathrooms (see gift shop for price/details)
**Tent camping is allowed near the light house or on the beach in certain areas. All personal vehicles must schedule ferry ride out of Davis, NC-further North up the island where there are also some small rustic cabins for rent by the NC Park Service)
*** if you are older, love history, and are looking for a unique week long experience, you may be interested in becoming a volunteer light house keeper, yourself,-if so, talk to the NC park service.

A nice get away at another state park. Various local Kayak and Paddle Board rental shops offer fun daily excursions around the sound's islands.

We didn’t have to worry about the kids’ skill or strength since we took out the tandem kayaks and the girls offered to tow us if we got too tired. Luckily the waves weren’t bad. We loved the horses, the seashell and sea life lessons on Carrot Island across from the Beaufort Waterfront (Rachel Carson Reserve) and navigating our own boats. We will definitely schedule anther one at low tide so we can paddle out to explore the closest Sand dollar Island!
