Zealandia is an amazing visit as a pest free "mainland island", allowing native flora and fauna to flourish. There are many different walks around, with varying accessibility from wheelchair friendly concrete paths to narrow rocky tracks. All walks have great views and awesome bird life, if in doubt, the visitor centre will answer all your questions.

Great birdlife in this reserve, very close to where you are staying. Lovely small walks through the wetland, with bird-watching huts to observe all sorts of wetland and sea birds.

Battle Hill has a mixture of regenerating forest, old-growth forest and pasture. Lovely walks from 10 minutes up to a few hours. There are also great informative signs at the entry.

If you are into mountain biking, Makara Peak comes highly recommended. There are many different tracks for a variety of skill levels, with fantastic views to the city and also out to the South Island on clear days.

Whitireia Park has some great walks down at the beach and up on the top of the hills, with some fantastic wind and wild weather during storms. Be careful and stay away from the edges as gusts can be very dangerous.

Amazing views out to sea high above SH1 on a steep but well graded track that takes a few hours one way. Make sure to organise return transport as this is not a loop path. There are often busses or trains available to take you back to your start point.
