The Franklin Institute is like a giant science lab, albeit one with a walk-through model of the heart (claustrophobes, beware). The layout is highly interactive, whether you're stepping on a scale to learn how many pints of blood you have or climbing a webbed trail of nets that mimic the brain's pathways.

Though it's home to one of the world’s most extensive collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Early Modernist paintings, it's not just what's displayed inside that the Barnes that makes it a standout. Barnes was an innovator who often flouted convention. He displayed the works in ensembles, pairing pieces in arrangements that encouraged viewers to look at the works in an entirely new way.

Eastern State Penitentiary, where crime boss Al Capone famously served time, was once considered the future of America's corrections: It was the most expensive prison constructed and was considered revolutionary. It's impossible to enter without getting the chills. With its imposing Gothic architecture, crumbling walls, and somber history, the building has a haunted feel.
