Mount Mitchell is the highest peak East of the Mississippi River and the views from the top are super long range. The hike is 4 miles round trip. It is about an hour and a half drive from the dome.

It is a great hike anytime, but during the Spring the Azaleas & Rhododendron are in full bloom and are very pretty.

208 Busick Work Center RdNice waterfall hike that is an easy 1.5 mile round trip. The trailhead is about an hour and 15 minute drive from the dome. Roughly 100 feet of cascading waterfalls. The parking area is a tad small, so I'd recommend getting there early if going on a weekend.
This is more of a stair climb than a hike - so you will earn your dinner & beers on this trek. The views from Chimney Rock as well as the even higher overlook are all worth it. After you hike back down to your car I recommend hanging out in the town of Chimney Rock for a drink or meal. This is about a half hour from the dome.
