Surfing

Some of the best and most well know surf beaches in Cornwall. There are a number of surf shops that you can hire everything you will need for a surf trip.
There are some very cool little bars and restaurants in St Agnes worth a look. On the way down to the village there are two bars just off the roundabout, just opposite the surf shop where you can buy or rent anything you might need for a days surfing. Super reasonable too. Then down on the slip to the beach there is a great pub and a very good bistro overlooking the beach.

Good quality beach break, capable of providing punchy waves at most states of tide. The beach faces pretty much due west so is offshore in an easterly wind, although high cliffs provide some degree of shelter towards hightide. When it's good here it's very good with decent barrels to be had and the ability to handle a decent sized swell. This is reflected in the standard of surfing and the beach's popularity. At low tide the beach is much bigger and joins up with Lushingtons to the south which is renowned for it's barrelling left handers. Probably not one of the best beaches for beginners, particularly towards high tide when it becomes a little narrow and rocky.

St Michael's Mount is an island castle set in the middle of Mount's Bay, just off the coast of Marazion. The Mount is now managed by the National Trust but remains the home of St Aubyn family. St Michael’s Mount is a picturesque island just off the shore at Marazion. Accessible by causeway when the tide is low, or by boat at high-tide, the Mount is home to a working community of local people, as well as a large medieval castle! The castle creates an imposing, dramatic spectacle when viewing the island from the land or sea. Perched up high on the craggy rocks, the castle has the façade of Gothic architecture. On closer inspection, however, it is far more welcoming and is made even more appealing by the backdrop of the ocean, particularly on a sunny day. Whilst it is 25 miles away form the caravan, it is worth the 45 minute (ish) trip.

Geevor Tin Mine, situated on the Atlantic Coast of the far west of Cornwall, is the largest preserved mining site in the United Kingdom In 1991 Geevor Tin Mine was finally closed after 300 years of tin mining and a final bitter struggle for survival. This was the last working mine in West Penwith in the far west of Cornwall. The site opened as a Museum and Heritage Centre in 1993 and has been managed by Pendeen Community Heritage since 2001. It is believed that the word, Geevor, is derived from the Cornish for goat. The Museum and Heritage Centre is situated on the outskirts of Pendeen, on the coast road between Land's End and St Ives. It is the largest mining history centre in the UK and holds a unique collection of mining artefacts and mineral displays. Some of the surface buildings house the magnificent original winders and compressors. The mill is where ore was processed to produce tin concentrate. The rock was washed, crushed, separated and refined. A dark band of tin concentrate is still clearly visible on the shaking tables, some of which are more than 70 years old. The fascinating displays in the museum contain not only mineral samples but archive photographs of the mine and miners at work. There are working models of the steam and air stamps, which were used to crush ore, and various other artefacts used and worn by the miners. Watch the film show. Geevor is an industrial site and some of the ground is steep and uneven. It is advisable to sensible shoes, essential if taking the underground tour. Hard hats are supplied and it is necessary to wear these; parts of Wheal Mexico Mine are both narrow and low. An expert guide takes visitors into the long abandoned 18th century adit mine. The records indicate that this area was mined between 1824 and 1917, after which it was closed up, only to be reopened in the 1990s. Some of the guides are former tin miners with first hand experience. The shop has a wide range of books about Cornwall’s mining heritage and there are various tin artefacts, pewter jewellery and other gifts and souvenirs for sale there. The café has great views over the Atlantic coast and offers drinks, cooked meals and snacks. Dogs are welcome on the site, but not on the Underground Tour. The Geevor Museum and Heritage Centre is open daily, apart from on Saturdays, throughout the year, apart from at Christmas. Admission times vary according to the season. It is situated on the coast road between St Ives and Land’s End, close to the village of Pendeen. Whilst the tin mine is 35 miles and approx. 1 hours drive from the caravan, the road takes you through some of the most beautiful countryside and cute country pubs on the way. You could also visit the Pendeen lighthouse while you are here.

The Eden Project is a collection of giant, multi-domed greenhouse, containing plants from various regions of the globe. 80 acres of superb grounds with a complex of walled gardens and a huge, productive vegetable garden. Set in one of the most mysterious estates in England, Heligan. The gardens in Heligan near Mevagissey were reclaimed thanks to Tim Smit, the creator of the Eden Project . The estate was occupied by the Tremayne family from the early 17th century until the First World War, when the house was commandeered for use as a convalescent home for officers. During this period, the gardens were neglected and the neglect continued after the return of the family. This was at least partly due to social changes and the inability to find sufficient gardeners for estates of this size. The Lost Gardens are 22 miles and approx. a 40 minute drive from the caravan.

Places to take the kids!

The beach in Perranporth (7/8 minute drive) has a car park right in front of it and there is the cutest stream that runs down the beach with a footpath bridge over it for playing poo sticks. I played in this stream for hours myself when I was young. There is a bar on the beach called The Watering Hole if you can get them out of the stream, go here. Follow the Watering Hole on Facebook it is well worth it to get you in the mood. I guarantee you that the stream on Perranporth beach and a body board or two will keep them going for hours. There are a number of surf shops in the town who rent and sell all the equipment you will need from wetsuits to surfboards and body boards. Perranporth is easily one of the longest beaches in Cornwall, composed of over three miles of golden sand. Quieter than the Newquay beaches it does nevertheless get crowded during the holiday months, especially as the waves are friendly and good for beginners and the beach is part of a bustling town. There is plenty of space to spread out, however, and more experienced surfers generally head to Droskyn Point, on the far left side, where sandbanks often yield sizeable well-formed waves and there is some protection from south-westerlies.
