Aviles Street in St. Augustine is the oldest street in the nation — we know because archaeologists, digging several layers under the brick paving, recently found pottery shards from the early 1600s. This historic street is also St. Augustine's original artist district, dating back to the 1930s when the Hamblin Hardware warehouse at 11 Aviles Street was transformed into studio and gallery spaces for artists. Still one of St. Augustine's vibrant arts districts, the street also boasts some of St. Augustine's oldest historical sites such as the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, the Spanish Military Hospital, and the Father O'Reilly House Museum.

Please note that this attraction is not for everyone! It is a unique presentation that combines academic research with the contradictive, emotionally repulsive draw of a time in history when torture and torment were commonplace. The “Medieval Torture Collection” reminds us just how much suffering humanity can inflict in the name of cause and justice when the right tools are placed in the hands of fanatics, madmen and tyrants. Based on historical documents and engravings, we have amassed an unprecedented collection of cruelty, re-creating the atmosphere that prevailed throughout most of the Middle Ages. For several years, a team of scientists, historians, decorators and sculptors have worked on creating a unique collection consisting of several hundred pieces filling more than 4000 sq. ft.

Neighborhoods

Davis Shores is one of the oldest communities on Anastasia Island, it was developed in the 1920's by D.P. Davis, and it is at the Northern end of the Island, by the Bridge of Lions. The community of Davis Shores actually built the bridge around 1926-27 and to this day; it is the only way to get to Anastasia Island from St. Augustine unless you travel by water. Davis shores was planned to be an exclusive community including canals and hotel and casino however, development stalled in the 1920s and it was not until after WWII that the area of Davis Shores started to see new growth. There are very few of the original properties from the 1920s left but Davis Shores does have great waterfront properties and properties closer to the interior of the island. Davis Shores has the best of both worlds, being near downtown St. Augustine and being on Anastasia Island and all that it has to offer. Many of the houses are affordable and if you are looking for value, you will be hard pressed to beat what you can find in Davis Shores.
