Museum

The "Vatican Museums" are the museum center of the Vatican City, in Rome. Founded by Pope Julius II in the 16th century, they occupy a large part of the vast courtyard of the Belvedere and are one of the largest art collections in the world, since they exhibit the enormous collection of works of art accumulated over the centuries by the popes: the Sistine Chapel and the papal apartments frescoed by Michelangelo and Raphael are part of the works that visitors can admire on their way. Although the museums are located entirely in Vatican territory, their entrance is in Italian territory, in viale Vaticano 6 in Rome.

The "Capitoline Museums" constitute the main municipal civic museum of Rome, part of the Museums System of Roma Capitale. Opened to the public in 1734, under Pope Clement XII, they are considered the first museum in the world, intended as a place where art could be enjoyed by everyone and not just by the owners. We speak of "museums", in the plural, as the original collection of ancient sculptures was added by Pope Benedict XIV, in the eighteenth century, the Pinacoteca, consisting of works illustrating mainly Roman subjects.

The "Palazzo delle Esposizioni" is a neoclassical building, located in via Nazionale. Designed by Pio Piacentini since 1877, it was inaugurated in 1883. The building has been the site of numerous events and art exhibitions. During the Fascist era, its facade on the occasion of some exhibitions (Mostra della Rivolazione Fascista, Mostra Augustea della Romanità) was temporarily modified because its style was considered not in step with the times. Over time, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni has been restored several times and functionally adapted. The Palace is equipped with a 139-seat Cinema Hall, a 90-seat Auditorium and the Forum (multifunctional hall), as well as a cafeteria, a restaurant for 240 people and a library.

The "Mercati di Traiano" constitute an extensive complex of Roman buildings in the city of Rome, on the slopes of the Quirinal hill. Since 2007 they have housed the "Museum of the Imperial Fora". The complex, which originally extended beyond the limits of the current archaeological area, in areas now occupied by modern palaces, was mainly intended as the seat of administrative activities connected to the Imperial Fora, and only to a limited extent for commercial activities, which perhaps they took place in the open spaces on the sides of the internal streets. The complex was built at the same time as the Forum of Trajan, at the beginning of the second century, to occupy and support the cut of the slopes of the Quirinal hill, and is separated from the Forum by a paved road. It takes up the semicircular shape of the exedra of the Trajan's forum and is divided into six levels.
