First came Lacalaca in Seminyak, then came Lacalita in Canggu, and then, the technicoloured team behind Bali’s best Mexican joints set up shop in Ubud with Lacasita Fonda Mexicana. Step aside patchouli, alfalfa sprouts and kombucha – chillis, enchiladas and Laca’s legendary Jalapeño Margaritas comin’ through! That’s right Mexi-holics, Lacasita is spicing up Ubud’s food scene with its fresh, modern and muy picante contemporary cuisine. With a menu inspired by the boss’s recent trips to Mexico, Lacasita is where you’ll find the newest creations out of all of the Lacas – think ginger tiger’s milk ceviche, sweet potato tacos and three types of mole – plus plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, because it is Ubud, after all… Lacasita Fonda Mexicana, Jl Sri Wedari No. 4, Ubud, p. +62 822 4784 7216, e. info@lacalacabali.com; Open daily 12pm – 11.30pm.

Mozaic Restaurant Gastronomique has won so many awards, we can’t even begin to list them all. It’s a legendary dining destination in the world of gastronomy, flocked by foodies from around the globe (so you’ll want to make a booking!). That says quite a lot about Chef Chris Salans’ ever-changing high cuisine, which showcases European cooking techniques, fine imported ingredients and top-shelf local produce, sourced from the sea and farms across Bali. Try the Javanese Baby Lamb with smoked eggplant, Kenari nuts, cardamom and fresh curry leaf, and the Canadian Blue Lobster Tail with confit baby potato in a fresh clam juice-garden herb broth. This Ubud gem is just ten minutes from the town centre, away from the hustle and bustle with panoramic views of the surrounding forest that borders the dramatic Sayan valley. Expect casual fine dining here with a fantastic fusion of Latin-Japanese cuisine. We’re talking tuna croquettes with wasabi mash, foie gras Nigiri sushi and tempeh tempura tacos. YUM. And FYI, the breezy bar teetering on the edge of the gorge is exceptional for a stunning sunset. The Sayan House, Jl Raya Sayan No. 70, Sayan, Ubud, p. +62 361 4792592, e. info@thesayanhouse.com; Open daily 12pm – 10pm.

If you’re lucky enough to get a booking at this über-popular Ubud favourite (def book a table long before you actually arrive in Bali) you’ll know what all the fuss is about. As the name suggests, Locavore uses only sustainably sourced ingredients from around the island – even the plates and furniture are made locally. Go a la carte or try the famed, seven-course degustation feast for a true taste of Chef-Owners Eelke Plasmeijer and Ray Adriansyah’s culinary genius. In case you didn’t know, these guys made history at the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards by single-handedly representing Indonesia and becoming the only restaurant (ever) to skyrocket up the list by a whopping 27 places. Once you’re done losing your mind over their insanely good food, pop up the road to their spin-off cocktail bar The Night Rooster for a nightcap tipple or two. Locavore, Jl Dewi Sita, Ubud, p. +62 361 977 733; Open for lunch Tues – Sat 12pm – 2.30pm and dinner Mon – Sat 6.30pm – 10pm.

Powered by plants, Zest Ubud is one of our fave brunch restaurants in Bali’s hippie heart. Yes it’s vegan, but you won’t find boring bowls of alfalfa sprouts or soggy tofu here. Instead, expect meaty hunks of grilled jackfruit with caramelised corn and curry ‘mayo’, chunky kebabs stuffed full of fire-roasted eggplant, and hearty sides like smashed cassava fritters, taro root fries and sticky spiced carrots. And don’t even get us started on the desserts…. A Banana Muffin in a Glass? You betcha. It’s all a little bit naughty, but oh-so very nice – in more ways than one. Zest Ubud, Jl Raya Penestanan Kelod No.8, Ubud, p. +62 823 4006 5048, e. hello@zestubud.com; Open daily 8am – 10pm.

This Ubud underdog may well be small in size, but it’s made one helluva big wave on the Ubud food scene. Dishing up all-day bites done right, the Pan Asian menu goes from pandan hot cakes for brekkie, to pork belly steamed buns, soft shell crab stir fries and Beef Rendang for lunch and dinner. And while the food here excels all expectations, the cocktails have been causing a big stir too. The Smoked Negroni would fit right in at a New York speakeasy; the Salted Caramel Espresso Martini is up there with Bali’s very best cocktails; and the Your Majes-Tea is served up in a teapot for both taste and Instagram kudos. Cheers to that! Ibu Susu Bar & Kitchen, Jl Monkey Forest, Padang Tegal Kelod, Ubud, p. +62 361 9084861, e. info@ibususu.com; Open daily 12pm – 12am.

Three really is the magic number for Bali’s most treasured vegetarian restaurant group. First came Green Ginger Noodle House in Canggu, then The Elephant in Ubud (see below), and finally, the OGs of this conscious empire opened Dumbo – a modern wood-fired Italian food concept that’s just as green, clean and organic as its predecessors. On the same driveway as The Elephant, Dumbo is all about good, honest food that’s as earth friendly as possible – without compromising on flavour of course. Try the tempura zucchini flowers with ricotta, lemon, mint and green chilli mayo, the polenta with braised beetroot cheeks, and whatever you do, don’t miss the thin and crispy wood-fired pizzas (they come from a show-stopping design-driven oven). If that wasn’t tempting enough, 1% of all profits are donated to protect orangutans in Indonesia, so you’ve a good excuse to stuff yourself silly. Dumbo, Jl Raya Sanggingan, Ubud, p. +62 812 3838 9993, e. bookings@dumbobali.com; Open daily 12pm – 3pm & 5pm – 10pm.

First opened in Canggu as Bali’s first ever hand-roll bar, TYGR has brought all of our fave staples to this Ubud address – next-level nori rolls and modernised Japanese plates included. Everything is made fresh (there’s no questionable sushi train here) with hand rolls made-to-order and rolled right in front of your eyes with still-warm rice, shatteringly crisp nori, and oh-so fresh fillings. It goes without saying, a Sake or ice-cold Sapporo tops it all off… TYGR Ubud, Jl Penestanan Kelod No.8, Ubud, p. +62 813 3916 3894, e. info@tygrsushi.com; Open daily 11am – 10pm.

Superb Mexican cuisine with a twist; everything on the menu at La Pacha Mama is either totally veggie or pescetarian, with all the traditional meat ingredients replaced with plant-based produce and hella-fresh seafood. Think drunken mushrooms and carrot tostadas to start, or shrimp tacos and slow-cooked jackfruit burritos for the mains. A smattering of desserts and a very grown up drinks list adds to the flavour of this Ubud staple. We can hardly keep up with the ever-growing collection of world-class ventures from celeb Indonesian chef Mandif Warokka (the man behind Teatro Gastroteque in Seminyak & BLANCO Par Mandif in Ubud), but Yatta Izakaya is the latest showstopper from this culinary mastermind, and this time, he’s introducing fine Japanese food to the Ubud ‘hood. You’ll want to reserve one of these hot seats, because Mandif has his sights set on Michelin stars, and we don’t doubt him for a second. Working with local farmers, the food is fresh and produced locally, and whilst the degustation menu takes centre-stage, lets not forget the drinks. The signature restaurant at Capella Ubud (a stunning, glamping-style retreat in the heart of the rainforest) Api Jiwa is a theatrical Asian street food restaurant in an al-fresco jungle setting. Named after the Sanskrit word for ‘fire to the soul’, the main drawcard here is Api Jiwa’s interactive Robatayaki grill, dishing up contemporary bites that follow a neck-to-tail, farm-to-table cooking philosophy. Skewered and grilled with five-star precision (thanks to the expertise of Aussie chef Matt McCool), high quality cuts of Australian meat, seafood, fish and offal are flavoured by native spices and organic, seasonal vegetables from the camp’s kitchen garden and surrounding farms. There are no menus here, only an ever-changing ‘Omakase Stye’ culinary experience where each dish is tailored to a group of just 16 lucky diners. At Bebek Bengil (AKA the Dirty Duck Diner) word has got around that their signature dish, Bebek Betutu, is arguably the best on the island. The whole menu here is almost entirely dedicated to duck – crispy fried duck, duck in chilli sauce, duck fried rice, and of course, smoked duck. If you’re planning a visit, be sure to order the Bebek Betutu a day before so you’re not disappointed with a sell out. Dine indoors in the main restaurant building, or kick back in one of the traditional bamboo pondoks (raised huts with a long table and cushions) looking out over the rice fields. Killer martinis and pork ribs are the done thing at Naughty Nuri’s Warung in Ubud – the original location for this world-renowned resto (there’s Naughty Nuri’s Seminyak too). The famous ribs and twisted martinis here helped put Ubud on the international food map way back when, and it’s easy to see why. Their secret BBQ sauce is lathered on the ribs before being grilled to perfection – you’ll smell Naughty Nuri’s before you even see it, drawn in by the smouldering BBQ that’s sweet, savoury and oh-so sticky! You can’t reserve a table, so make sure you get here in good time, and be prepared to share a table with a fellow martini-mate. Probably Bali’s most iconic local dish, babi guling (also known as suckling pig) is one nose-to-tail delicacy that you have to try. It’s usually served with rice, pork sausage, sayur urap (a vegetable salad in coconut chilli dressing), huge cuts of spice-rubbed, spit-roasted meat and the crispiest, crunchiest and most scrumptiously flavoured skin – all of which has been cooked to tender-perfection from hours upon hours of slow-roasting. YUM. Try: Warung Ibu Oka (Jl Tegal Sari No.2, Ubud), Babi Guling Candra (Jl Teuku Umar, Denpasar) or Warung Babi Guling Pak Malen (Jl Sunset Road No. 5, Seminyak)

Ubud is known as Bali’s cultural heart, and up here in this lush inland area, the hills are alive with the sounds of meditation, yoga and… a bustling town centre. While downtown Ubud today may resemble Seminyak’s hippest strips, Bali’s artistic beating heart is still a very special place once you get away from the busy central streets. Ubud has become world-famous for good reason, not only because of Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love” encounter, but rather for its postcard-perfect vistas of rice paddies, palm trees and luscious green vegetation, along with its range of cultural and soulful activities that revolve around nature, wellness, adventure and the sacred Agung River. Ubud hotels: Ubud’s accommodation scene has something for everyone and every budget. You can luxe out at five-star, designer address such as the famous Ubud Hanging Gardens (with that famous infinity pool) or the award-winning Four Seasons at Sayan (design drool) with its jungle-hugged restaurants and world-class spa. Or, for a fraction of the price, you can enjoy some of Ubud’s favourite digs with rice field views, like Ubud’s famous eco-stay, Bambu Indah. Check out our guide to Ubud’s best hotels and resorts here. Ubud itinerary: Top 5 things to do in Ubud. 1. Eat out at Ubud’s best restaurants, from the award-winning fine-diners, to the hippie-fied vegan and vegetarian cafes. 2. Stretch and exhale at Yoga Barn (or any of the awesome yoga studios around). 3. Get cultured. Sign up to a Balinese cooking class, see a traditional healer, watch a ceremonial dance, or visit Ubud’s many Hindu temples, including the healing water temple, Tirta Empul. 4. Explore nature. Visit the Tegallalang rice paddies, go white-water rafting on the Ayung River, hunt for hidden waterfalls, or wake up early for a sunrise trek up Bali’s Mount Batur volcano. 5. Go wild with Ubud’s wildlife. Meet naughty primates at the infamous Ubud Monkey Forest, or go wild at Bali Zoo and eat brekkie with orangutans!

Though Sanur is Bali’s quiet coastal village, this charming neighbourhood on the east coast has finally outgrown its ‘sleepy’ reputation. Spilling with lovely little cafes, fantastic restaurants, lush hotels and plenty of spas for your ooh-and-aahs, there’s lots to see and do in Sanur for anyone looking for a slower pace of life compared to Seminyak or Canggu. If you ask us, Sanur is one of Bali’s best kept secrets. Its sleepy rep has kept the crowds away from its charming streets. Chirping birds can still be heard from flowering tropical foliage, and Sanur’s salty sea air has room to cascade through lush tropical landscapes and traditional resorts that have preserved Bali’s true beauty. Check out our Ultimate Sanur Guide here. Sanur hotels: A mix of private villas and beachfront resorts, Sanur is home to fabulous hotels that feel like home – the kind of hotels that travellers come back to year after year, and where the staff still remember their names. One of those resorts is Hyatt Regency Bali, with its flowering gardens, fabulous restaurants and world-class wellness destination. There’s also the affordable and family-friendly Artotel, and the fabulous Fairmont. Sanur itinerary: Top 5 things to do in Sanur. 1. Take a walk along the famed beachfront promenade and meander past resorts, beachfront cafes, wooden fishing boats under repair and elegant old villas built decades ago by wealthy expats who fell under Bali’s spell. 2. Sign up to a scuba diving course. Sanur is home to Bali’s largest collection of professional scuba schools, so there’s no better place to earn your certificate and dive into the deep! 3. Meet Nemo beneath Sanur’s gentle waves with the Bali Seawalker. Simply pop on your astronaut-like helmet and breathe as normal – no prior diving or swimming skills needed! 4. Get pampered at a beachfront spa. At The Nest, your tootsies can be treated while touching the sand (it’s super affordable too!) 5. Island-hop to nearby Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida. Sanur is the gateway to this trifecta of paradise islands – all just a hop, skip and a short 40 minute boat-ride away.

The cool kid on the Bali block is Canggu – the once-sleepy surf town just north of Seminyak. With endless rice paddies in every direction, you still get that feeling of “real Bali” here, but venture onto the buzzing Batu Bolong or Berawa strips and you’ll find hip cafes, incredible restaurants, world-famous beach clubs and a cool community of hipsters, surfers and digital nomad expats. Pronounced ‘Chang-goo’, this trendy little neighbourhood runs from the famous black sand beaches of Berawa, right up to Pererenan and Seseh, but it’s best-known for the famous Echo Beach surf spot and Batu Bolong’s buzzing beach scene. Merging the best of old and new Bali, expect an emerging drinking, dining, shopping and spa scene fringed by picturesque rice paddies that are still actively farmed daily. Canggu hotels: A refreshing change to the urban sprawl of Seminyak and a world away from the luxury enclave of Nusa Dua, Canggu’s hotel & resort scene is both boho and beautiful. From bohemian abodes like the Eco Gypsy Houses, to swanky pads hidden beneath swaying coconut palms (hellooo The Slow) the options are as endless as the Indian Ocean’s horizon. Check out our guide to Canggu’s best hotels and resorts here. Canggu itinerary: Top 5 things to do in Canggu. 1. Eat at a hipster cafe. Kintamani is one of the most scenic and interesting areas of Bali, and well worth a visit. Get out of the hustle and bustle of the busy beach towns, and feast your eyes on Lake Batur and Mount Batur. For the active people out there, how about an all day cycling tour around Lake Batur? Starting with breakfast overlooking the active volcano [now that’s not something you do everyday!] in Kedisan Village, you will hop on your bikes and cycle pass the black lava fields [left over from when Batur Volcano erupted in 1963 eek!], Buahan Village, Abang Village and Ulun Danu, a traditional temple by the lake. The tour offers stunning scenery and a beautiful view of the lake. However you want to take in the stunning sights of Kintamni, it is worth doing. Have you got the need for speed? Spend the morning chasing friends in the jungle on off-road cars or quad bikes! Half way down the descent of the river, you will also get the chance to stop for a electrifying ride on the Flying Fox zip line! It’s busy, it’s social, and it’s certainly value-for-money – Kuta was Bali’s first neighbourhood to be hit by tourism, and so, it’s the least traditional of them all. But don’t wipe it off your radar just yet. If you’re looking for a budget holiday, or you’re bringing the kids and need plenty of activities to keep them occupied, then Kuta might just be right for you (it’s home to Bali’s famous Waterbom water park and the bustling Beachwalk Shopping Mall). And if you want to escape the hustle and bustle but remain within walking distance of the cheap eats, spas and markets? Just outside of Kuta is up-and-coming Legian, with its lineup of cafes, restaurants, shops and emerging brunch scene. Legian charges slightly higher prices compared to Kuta, with a good mix of private villas, boutique hotels, character-filled beach bars and some fancier restaurants for good measure. Kuta hotels: Over the years, Kuta has seen incredible development, with some fancy neighbours moving in to help jazz-up this once-tired ‘hood. You can stay at the five-star Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort for a prime beachfront address at brilliant prices (it’s great for families) or take things up a notch at The Anvaya Beach Resort with its designer digs right on the sands. Or, go old-school with a family-friendly stay at Hard Rock Hotel. Kuta itinerary: 1. Shop up a storm at Beachwalk. This incredible al-fresco mall comes with beach views, an open-air rooftop, plus fabulous stores from near and far, including Topshop, Zara, Victoria’s Secret and H&M, as well as a cinema, food court and regular entertainment. 2. Slip and slide at Waterbom – Asia’s number one water park that boasts the biggest collection of slides for water babies of all ages! 3. Learn to surf at Kuta Beach. Still one of the most popular breaks on the island, these rolling waves are best for learners, with plenty of instructors on hand to share your first-wave smiles with! 4. Catapult into the sky on the 5GX Reverse Bungy and reach dizzying heights at a whopping speed of 200 km/hour! Adrenaline junkies, this one’s for you… 5. Have a boozy night out on Kuta’s wildest strip. Kuta is infamous for its raucous nightlife, with super-clubs like Sky Garden and Bounty leading the charge. Note: shirtless, drunk Australians are the norm here!
