Wineries in Sonoma County

Award-winning wines come from Sonoma County’s more than 425 wineries. The Pacific coastline, redwood forests, valleys, and mountains create a range of terroirs and microclimates that make Sonoma County one of the most diverse and unique winegrowing regions in the world. Sonoma County includes 18 distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), or appellations, including Sonoma Valley, Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Sonoma Coast. Our wineries are known for a multitude of varietals, so there’s a bottle for you no matter your preference.
For more than four decades, the wines of St. Francis Winery & Vineyards have reflected the finest mountain and valley vineyards in Sonoma County. Our founder, Joe Martin, fell in love with Sonoma Valley and established St. Francis Vineyard in 1971, planting 22 acres of Chardonnay and the first 60 acres of Merlot in Sonoma Valley. After achieving great success as a grower, Joe opened his own winery in 1979 with his business partner Lloyd Canton.

In late 1989 Ledson Construction was about to break ground on a spec house and vineyard property in the heart of the Sonoma Valley wine country, when a partner in the project pulled out. Convinced that the 21-acre property–with views of the corner of Annadale Park that was once Steve’s grandparent’s ranch–was the perfect spot for his dream house and vineyard; Steve jumped in. He immediately set about making it his own, planting 17 acres to Merlot and designing the ultimate architectural showpiece. By the time of their first harvest in 1993, the 16,000 square foot Gothic, French-Normandy structure replete with a custom-colored brick edifice, slate tile, turrets, balconies, and fountains had begun to take shape and stop traffic. Steve realized that “The Castle”, as locals had come to call it, was long on looky-loos and short on privacy. Based upon the public interest and the quality of their first harvest, Steve decided to transform the house into a winery and tasting room and to build the family home elsewhere. A quick change of plans was followed by four painfully long years acquiring commercial permits and two more years of re-construction before the winery’s eventual completion.

Mayo Family Winery was founded in 1990 by Henry & Diane Mayo, and their son Jeffrey. Upon retiring from their day-to-day Real Estate Business, Henry & Diane purchased what would become our 10-Acre Estate Vineyard, the Laurel Hill Vineyard. Their intent was to produce exceptional Chardonnay grapes, and sell to local wineries; passion prevailed and led them to produce their own wine, under their own label. In 1994, the Mayo's released their first vintage of Estate-Grown Chardonnay, then in 1997 purchased the Ricci Vineyard in the Russian River Valley with the goal of producing exceptional Old Vine Zinfandel. During that time, they converted the bottom floor of their Real Estate office in Kenwood into a Co-Op Tasting Room called "The Family Wineries", which is now The Mayo Family Winery Reserve Room. In 2001, they added 3 acres onto their Estate Vineyard to produce Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir, and around that time also completed construction on their Main Tasting Room in Glen Ellen.

Asian noodles are having their time in the Sonoma County sun these days, with about a half dozen new shops opening over the past year or so. Each has a slightly different focus, and here, at Ippinn Udon & Tempura, the name says it all. Except actually, the cheerful, fast casual shop also offers bites like potato croquettes, chicken karaage, octopus balls and taiyaki (adorable bean paste desserts fashioned into fish shapes). Plus, you can switch out noodles for rice, and the toppings available for both are so lengthy it’s almost like a full restaurant. Chicken, pork belly, curry tofu… you get the tasty idea.

Fisherman have fished in and around Bodega Bay for centuries. Coast Miwok, Spanish, Russian, Mexican and most recently American fisherman have all earned a living fishing in the Bay. Lucas Wharf, formerly known as the Lazio Dock, has long been a hub for local fisherman.
