The Olive Tree Museum of Vouves is ideally located next to the Monumental Olive Tree of Vouves, the oldest olive tree in the world. The olive tree is 3.500 years old. Which is visited by approximately 20.000 people every year from all over the world. The number of visitors is expected to increase rapidly in the years to come. The Monumental Olive Tree of Vouves has been declared as “natural heritage monument” by decision no 603/17-2-1997of the Secretary General of the Region of Crete, due to its special ecological and historical importance. There are at least ten more monumental olive trees in this area, namely the same number of trees as in the whole of Crete. This fact testifies to the long-standing relationship between the residents of this area with the olive tree that dates back to antiquity. For all of the above reasons, the Municipal Council, having full knowledge of the responsibility that it bears to safeguard this great legacy, has decided to expand the present Olive Tree Museum and to update it so that in the future it may be turned into the Olive Tree Museum and Mediterranean Centre for the Study of Monumental Olive Trees. Our Municipality has already purchased a plot of 600 square metres in area near the Museum in the settlement of Pano Vouves, in addition to the rest of the land that it owns in this area, and it has begun the preparation of relevant studies for that purpose.

Preveli monastery is a historic place. The monastery consists of two main building complexes, the Lower (Kato) Monastery of Saint John the Baptist and the Rear (Pisso) Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, which is in operation today. The Monastery has a glorious history due to the active and leading involvement of its fellow monks in all national endeavourers for freedom and education of our people. Thus, it merits specific recognition and respect throughout the island of Crete. The oldest date related to the monastery is 1594, and it is engraved on a bell of the monastery. The monastery was probably founded during the Venetian occupation by a feudal lord known as Prevelis. When in 1649 the Turks occupied Crete, they destroyed numerous church establishments, among them the monastery of Preveli. The monastery was for three centuries the most important center due to its leading role in the local society of Saint Vassilios and Sfakia provinces, where due to the landscaping territory the Turkish occupation force allowed a peculiar system of political tolerance and a limited state of freedom. The Monastery of Preveli is a religious center and consequently the place of gathering and social contact of the population. Close to the monastery is Preveli beach. After the monastery you can visit Preveli beach. Well know as Palm beach as it has a lot of palm trees on the river bank. The river ends into the beach. You can swim in the river or in the sea. The car can not go down to the beach there is a stair case approximately 400 steps to go down.

The impressive cave of Zeus, the Diktaean Cave, is located above the village Psychro in Lassithi Plateau at an altitude of 1025m. In Psychro there is plenty of parking space, with plenty of restaurants nearby. Two paths leading to the cave start from the parking area. The easiest path is the left one, because in the right path (the oldest) the stones are worn by thousands of tourists and are slippery. The route to the cave is magnificent as the view to the Lassithi Plateau is breathtaking. If you do not want to walk, there are donkeys for transfering the visitors to the cave. Near the entrance of the cave there is a kiosk where you can buy tickets. The cave, which has an area of 2200 sq.m, is well lit and the paths in it come along a well-designed path of 250m length. Near the entrance, on the right there is a hall, while the great hall starts at a lower level. Southeast of the chamber there is a large stalagmite complex. Also, there are some buildings. A smaller hall is located on the northwest side. While moving inside the cave, the visitor enters the great hall with the largest part of it being covered by solid rock and large stalagmites. In the second part of the cave, there is a large and very spectacular stalactite, called as the “mantle of Zeus”. Unfortunately, this stalagmite has been damaged by visitors. The entire great hall has impressive decor with large columns, stalactites and stalagmites.

Katholiko monastery is from the 1600 century. Located at the mountainous area Arkoudovounia, 20km east of Chania, near the northern shores of Cape Akrotiri or Meleha. It is located inside the gorge Avlaki, at a short distance from the sea. It can be accessed through a stepped and carved cobbled path that starts from the monastery Gouverneto, passes near the church of Saint Anthony (Agios Antonios)Saint Anthony (Agios Antonios) and from the Cave of Panagia Arkoudiotissa and ends at the monastery Katholiko. If you keep walking to the sea, you will find yourself in a wonderful small fjord with turquoise waters, where there are the ruins of the old harbor of the monastery. The monastery complex was founded at the site of the cave where Saint John the Hermit or Xenos died during the 11th century. After the death of Saint John the Hermit, this wider inaccessible area known as Arkoudovounia became one of the most important ascetic centers in Crete. The cave was turned into a temple (it celebrates on September 20) and the surrounding cavities were originally a refuge for the hermits, while later some monk cells were also built. In the 17th century, in front of the cave, an extensive construction of buildings took place under the supervision of Jeremiah Tzagarolo and with architectural drawings from the works of Sebastiano Serlio, and thus the monastic complex acquired its current impressive form. You can even see the ruined cells of the hermits, the bell tower and the impressive bridge that crosses the river of the gorge, creating a large square that connects the two sides. At the foot of the bridge there are large vaulted storage spaces, while on both sides a two-storey building and a small series of vaulted rooms were built to house the pilgrims. The cult of Agios Ioannis spread so much in the wider area of Chania, that according to the census of 1637 the income from the pilgrims was one of the largest. This fact is very important, especially if one considers the strenuous course that the visitors had to hike then to approach Katholiko. When the shores of Crete became the target of the pirates, fear prevailed, the monastery was deserted and the monks were forced to move to a more secluded place and thus retired to the monastery Gouverneto. At the exit of the gorge to the sea there is a large rock in a shape reminiscent of a ship and, according to legend, it is a pirate ship that was stoned after the curses of the abbot of Katholiko. 1 10 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 TIMELINE 10th century: Saint John the Hermit, or Stranger, lives in the cave in the gorge of Avlaki and founds the small monastery. 1027: After his death, many hermits and ascetics come to Katholiko and the monastery grows. 16th-17th century: Due to the constant pirate raids, the monks leave Katholiko monastery. 1632: The Orthodox Church formally declares John the Stranger a Saint. The cave of Saint John the Hermit or Xenos in Avlaki Gorge, in north Cape Akrotiri, is located just a few hundred meters away from the monastery Gouverneto and next to the abandoned Katholiko Monastery. Similarly to Cave Arkoudospilios this was a riverbed with a total length of about 135 meters, forming a horizontal room. Its rich decoration is characterized by large stalactites and stalagmites. Inside the cave at the beginning and the end of the cave there are icons and candles. There is also a carved underground tank with coating, created to collect water. To the right of the tunnel, after 15 meters from the entrance, there is a small room with an artificial entrance. At the end of the cave, at 135m length, there is a big stone basin, which is told to have been the tomb of Saint John the Hermit. In this last room there are also several inscriptions of travelers, engraved on the walls and stalactites, some of which are very old.

The Melidoni Cave is located about 1 800 metres northwest of the village. It has an extremely interesting history and amazing archaeological findings some of which are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno. The Melidoni cave is also called "Gerondospilios". It was used for religious ceremonies. During the Minoan Civilization, it was a place of worship for Talos the bronze giant guardian of Crete who protected the island of Crete from enemies. It is of archaeological and historical interest. In October 1823 370 women and children and 30 warriors who hid from Hussein Bey sought refuge in the Melidoni cave. When he found out, the cave was surrounded by his army and he asked Cretan people to surrender. When they refused to do so, Ottomans started to attack them. Three months later they dropped combustible materials into an opening leading to the cave and set it on fire. Men, women and children lost their lives in the cave in January 1824. In the central room of the cave there is an ossuary containing the bones of the heroes of Melidoni cave. The arched entrance to the cave is leading to the first chamber of the cave called "Room of Heroes", where we see "Mnemion" (Monument), a complex filled with stalagmites. On the way to "Stavrodromi" (Crossroad) we get into the right chamber. We reach the "Pashley Room" where stalagmites and stalactites create a wonderful complex. As we keep on walking, the rock formations give the impression of being on another planet. In the "Room of the rocks" through a narrow path we reach the "Chamber of Katavothra" and we turn right to the "Iperoon" (Gallery). Walking down the cave we reach "Stavrodromi" again and we walk on the left side of the cave which has only one chamber "The Chamber of Curtains", which is adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Cave Zoniana, Sfendoni or Sfendoni's Hole, is located 1km north of Zoniana village in Mylopotamos, about 43km west of Heraklion and 52 southeast of Rethymno. It is shaped on the southern slopes of the hill Halepa at an altitude of 630m. The cave is accessible and is the most beautiful cave in Crete and one of the most beautiful in Greece, with rich stalactite and stalagmite decoration. It belongs to the Natural Park of Psiloritis, which is protected by UNESCO. It has been exploited for tourism and you will need to pay a cheap ticket. Information on exact ticket prices and opening hours of the cave, you will find on the website of Zoniana. You will need an experienced guide from Zoniana to accompany you, for your safety and the cave, who will give you all the information about the cave. The route in the cave is signed by metal corridors, fitted with ropes, for greater security. These are accessible even by persons with disabilities. The cave has an area of 3000 sq. m, and is one of the most beautiful in Greece. Visitors however are allowed only to visit two-thirds of it, walking along a corridor of about 270 meters. The maximum length of the cave is 145m. There are huge columns that create labyrinthine compartments inside the cave. Many stalactites and stalagmites of different colors and shapes decorate the 14 rooms of the cave. In several places, there are water basins. Also you can see the so-called "cave pearls”, a type of speleothem, a concretion of calcium salts which forms in limestone caves and resemble pearls. Finally, the glow coming from the tiny crystals of calcium carbonate is particularly impressive.

The beautiful monastery of Arkadi can be found in the foothills of the western Ida (Psiloritis) Mountain. The Cretans consider the monastery as a symbol of freedom from the turks. During the revolt in 1866, hundreds of refugees and Cretan freedom fighters sought sanctuary in the wine store rooms with the monks, where there was also a stash of gunpowder. When the Turks made their way towards their last refuge, the Abbot gave the order to fire the gunpowder. Hundreds of Cretans and Turks were killed; giving real meaning to the battle cry of Crete - “freedom or death”!

Every large aquarium that preserves and exhibits thousands of different organisms is a complex of buildings, mechanic and research infrastructures. At the Aquarium of Crete, the areas that support its daily operation and its behind the scenes preservation areas extend to 2600sqm. A very large part of this infrastructure is dedicated to quarantine areas - an aquarium within the aquarium. These tanks serve and combine different aims and targets, such as the adaptation of the animals, their de-worming, development to an appropriate size and the growth of stocking fish, the completion of the life circle for some animals in order for the needs of the exhibition to be ensured (e.g. jellyfish), the production and preservation of life feeds (phytoplankton, zooplankton, mussels, see weed) and the observation of organisms for scientific reasons. The diet of the animals is prepared daily, a variety of feeds that consists of mussels, prawns, squids, a variety of fish, industrial feeds based on the species’ requirements. The feeding procedure is performed by the appropriate staff of the Aquarium through the especially designed areas that serve the tanks. A process of particular importance is to ensure the maintenance of large carnivorous predators that coexist and compete for food pieces. Expert staff controls the quantity each animal consumes. It is an impressive procedure that visitors may observer daily during particular times and realize the different behaviour and competition of the carnivorous predators, such as sharks. The natural sea water of the aquarium comes from a drilling 200m in depth, with consistent salinity and temperature ensuring valuable energy saving. The largest quantity of the water, after it is filtered, it returns to the tanks of the aquarium and only a small percentage of it is renewed. The remaining quantity of the water after going through a special process, is led to a drain and from there to the open sea, 400m away from the shore. Each tank is autonomous as far as the water purification is concerned. This purification is supported by mechanical filters that retain large debris from the water and by biological filters that retain various dangerous ions, as the water goes through layers of natural porous material (coral sand). The water purification here focuses on the retaining of substances toxic to the animals, such as ammonia (an animal metabolic product) or other derivatives of nitrogen and it is accomplished with the aid of bacteria which feed and grow with consumption of such ions. Also, almost every tank demands a different water temperature as different species live in it. In this way, hot and cold water pipes of planned length and cross-section are used to achieve the threshold temperature chosen in accordance with the requirements of biocoenosis hosted in each tank. Other facilities that take over a large part in the basements of the Aquarium are the pumping plant, the power room, the filters' area, the storage and feeds preparation areas. A tip visit Dinosauria park which is very close 1km away.

The Venetian Lighthouse of Chania, Crete: The lght house is in the Venetian harbour in Chania. The beautiful Venetian lighthouse is ideally located at the extreme end of the pier, at the entrance of the port and is considered to be the symbol of Chania. Initially, the lighthouse was built by the Venetians in 1570 and later on, it was reconstructed for the last time in 1830. It is conspicuous by its rectangular shape and its made of stone blocks. The lighthouse is no longer operational but it is still one of the top attractions of Chania for its magnificent architecture and historical interest. At night the lighthouse shines in the dark and it makes for a truly kaleidoscopic vignette. Visitors can walk along the Venetian walls but it is not allowed to enter its interiors. The view from the port of Chania is absolutely amazing.

The Cathedral of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Trimartiri), in Chania, is located in the middle of Halidon Street in the old town. The Cathedral of Chania is built in the exact position of an older temple, dating back to the 14th century. During the Ottoman Rule, the Cathedral of Chania turned into a soap factory. In fact, where today you see the belfry, were the cauldrons in which the materials for the production of soap were boiled. However, in a warehouse inside the temple, there was the image of the Presentation Virgin Mary with a candle always lit in front of it, with the tolerance of the Turkish Pasha of Chania.

The Küçük Hasan Pasha Mosque or Gialisi Tzami (mosque of the sea) is actually the only preserved mosque of the city of Chania. You will see it at the Venetian harbour in Chania. It was built on the site of a preexisting Christian temple after the conquest of Chania by the Ottomans in 1645, honoring Küçük Hasan Pasha. The mosque bears a large semispherical dome supported by stone arches. The north and west sides house a gallery that is topped by six small domes. This gallery was initially open, as used in the mosques, but in the late 19th century it was closed by arched openings. The mosque was a project of the same Armenian architect that built the mosque of Spaniakos, near Paleochora. The mosque was surrounded by a nice yard with tall palm trees, which hosted the graves of the Ottoman rulers. It ceased its operation in 1923 and its minaret was demolished in 1939. During the 2nd World War it housed the Archaeological Museum of Chania. Afterwards it was used as a storehouse, folklore museum, tourist information point and exhibition venue.

Firka fortress dominates the northwestern side, at the old port of Chania. It was built by the Venetians in the 16th century, just before the city fell into the hands of the Turks and was then called «Revellino del Porto». Firka fortress was clearly used as a form of protection against attacks, while the formation of the interior served as barracks and for ammunition storage. A large vaulted tank in the center was used for collecting water from the roofs. The fall of the city of Chania in the hands of the Turks in 1645, meant automatically that the fortress belonged to the new conquerors. That is when it got its current name, because “Firka” in Turkish means “barrack”. On the northern side of the Firka fortress were six consecutive domes, that sheltered the large cannons, so that they would face the entrance of the harbor and face any possible attacker. The (also vaulted) shooting range of the Firka Fortress was used as a prison since then and up to the Greek civil war of the 20th century. During the Ottoman rule, the Firka Fortress constituted the seat of the military governor of the city.

Today the castle and the castle of Spinalonga is preserved, in its most part, in good condition and the island is considered one of most important remaining strongholds in the Mediterranean sea. Over 300,000 visitors each year visit this charming island by boat, starting from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka, which is just 800 meters away. This number brings the island in the first five Byzantine / post-Byzantine archaeological sites in Greece. In 2005, the author Victoria Hislop wrote a gripping novel about Spinalonga, titled "The Island", which won the British Book Award of Newcomer of the Year 2007. The book has dominated for 24 weeks in the British top 10 and has been translated into over 15 languages, making Spinalonga and its history known throughout the world.

The 4th city of Crete is Agios Nikolaos. Trademark of Saint Nicholas is the picturesque Lake Voulismeni, a small lagoon in the center of the town, used as a small harbor where fishing boats stop. Dozens of legends are associated with it, mainly because of its very deep waters. At the bottom of the lake the Germans disposed of all their war material before leaving Crete in 1944. A walk around the lake is a very nice experience indeed. Other sights of Agios Nikolaos include the neoclassical buildings, the marina (the first marina in Crete), the island of All Saints (Agii Pantes) where many endangered Cretan wild goats are protected, Kitroplatia square with the taverns, and the pedestrian road with the cafes. Moreover, you'll be impressed by the stairs that are almost everywhere, as the city is built in an area with very steep slopes and roads could not be constructed.

Komolithi is one of the most bizarre and interesting landscapes in Crete. They are met at the village Potamida in Kissamos province, at the valley of river Tyflos, about 35km west of Chania. These are alternating small hills consisting of soft clay, which due to time erosion, have turned them to wonderful conical shapes. The landscape is reminiscent of Cappadocia and a similar place is only found at the area of Asprougas in Koufonisi islet, Sitia province. They are located very close to the village houses, at a very fertile area next to Tyflos River. Large and small meteors are shaped with completely bare sides and vegetation atop them. Ascending on Komolithi hills and walking among them is very easy. The Gorge of Therisso is a beautiful to go sight seeing. The main gorge is six kilometers long. The vertical cliffs are impressive and the lush vegetation has nothing to envy of the other Chania Gorges. The place deserves a visit, even with a vehicle, cobined with a visit in the historical beautiful village of Therisso, that is built at the foot of the White Mountains at an altitude of 580 meters, just 15 kilometers from the city of Chania. A visit here is something that will remain unforgettable to every visitor.

Zaros lake is a beautiful scenery surrounded by mountains. The village owes its popularity to its homonymous Lake and nearby gorge. To be more specific, it owes it popularity to the famous “Zaros” table water brand. Zaros table water actually flows from the nearby springs, which in turn pour their water into the lake. Zaros Lake is artificial. It was designed and shaped by the Forest Service in 1987. The idea was to store the water from the great Votomos spring (this is why Zaros Lake is also called Votomos Lake) and other smaller springs that originate from Psiloritis Mountain. The idea was more than good and the outcome was more than helpful to the whole area. Today, Zaros is not only famous, but it has become a pole of attraction for many visitors, both locals and tourists, who want to admire the beauty of the landscape and the… taste of the trouts and salmons fish-farmed in the lake and served by the local tavernas.

Lappa Avocado shop is in Argyroupolis village. From there is the entrance to the old town which used to be named Ancient Lappa. So after your visit at the Lappa Avocado store you can go a round trip to the old town. To see Venetian mansions, the mosaic floor, doorways with Latin inscriptions from the Venetian occupations in Argyroupolis. Many people ask me “Are there Avocado in Crete?” the answer is “of course!” We are the first and major producers in Crete. The cultivation of our Organic Avocado began 1984 with 500 trees, now days reach over 2500, and every year the number increases. In the early 90s due to lack of demand of avocado in Greek market, my father Stelios decided to develop the fruit with other different ways. So we were the first to begin the development of the fruit in oil, and later producing products based on that. The idea of natural cosmetics arose from my mother (Johanna), which for many years suffered from psoriasis (a chronic, non-contagious disease that affects the skin ) The need for treatment and relief of her problem encouraged us to study more closely the beneficial properties that have avocado oil to the skin. Thus was created the “Lappa Avocado” the summer of 1996, with just 3 products in the beginning, avocado oil, our natural soap and body lotion. With the passage of time, making slow, steady progress and always having as main focus on perfect quality, the number of our products increased. Today we have natural cosmetics in various forms, to suit every skin type. Natural cosmetics “Lappa Avocado” address primarily at an audience with skin allergies and sensitivities, but also to all who want a perfect result hydration and nutrition from top to toe!
