Newark Castle, Castle Rd, Glasgow PA14 5NH (6 minutes drive by car) Newark Castle was built in 1478 by the Maxwell family. In recent decades, great shipyards eclipsed this castle, making it difficult to see apart from on the river. Now, only one shipyard remains. Explore the Jacobean details on the exterior, go ‘below stairs’ to see how the castle’s servants lived, soak up the stunning views over the Firth of Clyde from the Castle. Adjacent to the castle is the Clyde Walkway, a decked riverside walk.

There are many scenic viewing points for the Loch but some include the village of Luss, the Duck Bay Marina and Firkin Point (all on A82). Lunderston Bay Nature Reserve and Beach Cloch Rd, Gourock, Greenock PA16 0DU (18 minutes drive by car) Sandy beach with picnic area, parking and toilets. Eat at the large Garden Centre across the road at the beach. A lovely day out for children.
Greenock Esplanade, Greenock PA16 7SD (10 minutes drive by car) A long walk ( at least one mile in each direction) so wrap up warm on winter days! Enjoy a fabulous ice-cream, Scottish tablet or another sweet treat from the famous local ice-cream shop “The Esplanade Cafe”. A cycling track stretches the whole length. There is regular seating provided for resting to look at the stunning views.
