One of the best coastal walks in England, with the sea on both sides in places. If you like walking and haven’t walked Tennyson down please do. Just 5 minutes from us.
Alum Bay is well known for its multi-coloured sand cliffs and stunning views across the Solent. Many homes around the world have a glass object filled with sand as a memento of a visit to Alum Bay and The Needles, but perhaps less well known is the recent history of Alum Bay. Approximately 70 million years ago, the sea bed rose, was eroded and then sank beneath the sea again. The new sea was shallow and it laid down a series of sands and clays. Some 10 million years later, movement in the bedrock caused these sediments to be pushed nearly vertically to form the multi-coloured cliffs that are visible today.

It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot" said Queen Victoria of Osborne House, her palatial holiday home on the Isle of Wight. Visit Victoria and Albert's private apartments, their bathing beach and children's play-cottage for an intimate glimpse of royal family life. Then stroll through the garden terraces where the stunning views across the Solent reminded Prince Albert of the Bay of Naples. Osborne reflects Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's passions, tastes and style. Ornate furnishings and artefacts from The Royal Collection fill rooms and corridors where Victoria entertained heads of state, inventors, princess and princesses and ruled the vast British Empire.

Yarmouth Castle, Isle of Wight provides a magnificent picnic spot, with views over the Solent for a lovely relaxing family day by the sea. Step inside and discover the atmospheric recreation of how the rooms were used in the 16th century, and see the exhibition about the many wrecks which occurred in the treacherous stretch of sea which the castle overlooks. This was the last and most sophisticated addition to Henry VIII's coastal defences; it was completed after his death in 1547, with the first new-style 'arrowhead' artillery bastion built in England.

It contains exhibitions about its involvement in both World Wars, plus two original gun barrels displayed in the parade ground. An underground tunnel leads to a searchlight emplacement overlooking the Needles Rocks. Newport Roman Villa was constructed in about 280 AD with local stone including flint, chalk, limestone and greensand with the walls remaining almost at their original height. The building was roofed with massive slabs of Bembridge limestone which needed large roof timbers to support them. Many of these roof slabs had a distinctive shape, pierced with a single hole to take a nail, were found on the site. It is likely the building was the centre of a wealthy estate

What is a Chine is the question we are most frequently asked – Chine is a word used only in the Isle of Wight and Dorset and means a deep narrow ravine with water running down to the sea. You can also think of an animal’s backbone or Chine of a boat, a deep, narrow scooped out cup, as in the Saxon for Shanklin – Scenc-hlinc, cup in the rising ground. The Chine spring rises in the Downs and can be spectacular in heavy rain, especially at night with the lights. There are many mineral springs (chalybeate) all over the Chine and Shanklin, discovered by Dr Fraser, Charles II’s physician. Shanklin briefly became a Spa in Victorian times and the treatment rooms are still there on the site of the Royal Spa Hotel. Over the centuries, the Chine was used mainly for smuggling, so prevalent in the 18th Century, that the Customs and Excise officers had to be stationed in the Old Village. It had already started to attract increasing interest for its beauty and became a favourite with artists, writers, poets which our Exhibition highlights.

For nearly a century the Museum of Isle of Wight Geology, above Sandown Library, housed the Island's geology and fossil collections. On August 10th 2001 this changed with the opening of Dinosaur Isle, a purpose built interactive museum which replaced the old museum. Dinosaur Isle provides the space and facilities to properly display and conserve the rich geological collections. Dinosaur Isle is managed by the Isle of Wight Council and cost £2.7 million, half of which was provided by a Millennium Commission grant. The new museum is located on Culver Parade, a short distance from the old building, and was designed by local architects Rainey Petrie Johns in the shape of a giant pterodactyl. The interior was designed by Leicester based Haley Sharpe Design, who employed an array of sub-contractors to make everything from showcases to rock re-constructions to full sized fleshed dinosaurs!

The imposing buildings of Quarr Abbey impress themselves upon the mind of many visitors to the Isle of Wight. But few people know much about either the buildings or who built them. Indeed, a first view of the Abbey towers seen from the Fishbourne ferry has led to their mistaken identification as the Island's Anglican cathedral, or even one of the Island prisons. Quarr Abbey was built as a monastery for the French Benedictine community of Solesmes who were living in exile on the Isle of Wight at the beginning of the twentieth century. Its architect was one of the monks, Dom Paul Bellot (1876-1944).

Tennyson Down

Tennyson down is a coastal walk between the Needles at Alum bay and Freshwater bay. You walk on top of the cliffs (perfectly safe) with sea views on both sides. Described as one of the best coastal walks in Europe. During the summer Spitfires use the Wight cliffs of Tennyson down to emulate the Wight cliffs of Dover with a paying passenger. It’s a beautiful sight from below.
