Sightseeing

These are noteworthy destinations in Arkansas. Most would be great for a day trip, some have spots for lodging/camping.
Some really cool hiking trails and an awesome scenic view of the valley. There is a restaurant in the lodge that serves standard food. Would make a fantastic day trip from the cottage.

Hot Springs is one of our favorite cities in Arkansas. You can walk up and downtown, visit natural Hot Springs on the side of the road. If you're visiting between January and March, they have a horse racing track (Oaklawn) that's a MUST. It's a fantastic time, especially if you love animals. There is also some pretty cool places to eat in Hot Springs. Delucca's Pizza is the best in town, Rocky's Corner is a close second. Rocky's is just across the street from Oaklawn, it's always jam-packed on a raceday. If you're around Hot Springs for breakfast, or if you're craving desert, you have to try Will's Cinnamon Shop. Very awesome pastries - Obviously the cinnamon rolls! We really haven't had a bad dining experience on Central - the main street downtown.

Really awesome spot for camping, hiking, and some sightseeing. There are several trails that vary in difficulty. If you visit Devil's Den, you MUST eat at Grandma's Country Cafe in Winslow. It's a buffet serving southern food and amazing pie! It is about 30 minutes from the state park, so plan accordingly.

The Buffalo River is another of our favorite places in Arkansas. This spot you would probably have to hit on your way across Arkansas. There are countless trails with breath-taking views and even waterfall trails. One trail leads to Hawksbill Crag, which is one of the most photographed places in Arkansas. You can also watch protected elk graze in the valley at dusk and dawn. It's quite the attraction and they draw giant crowds. We love to canoe the river. It's lined nearly the entire route with gigantic bluffs. Just a great area to relax. You'll want to eat at the Low Gap Cafe. The chef at this restaurant used to cater for Liberace in California - his specialty is Italian food. The second food recommendation would be the Ozark Cafe. Awesome food - but still second to the Low Gap Cafe!

Some friends run a small day-trip area on the Mulberry River called Mulberry River Outdoor Adventures. They're right on a river that's perfect for canoeing/kayaking, hamocking, and exploring the area. Awesome spot!

Wine Tasting

Arkansas wine tasting! This is one of our most-favorite places in the state! There are about 4-5 wineries on a stretch of road in rural Arkansas. These families date back to the 1880's! We would recommend Weiderkehr, Post, and Mount Bethel wineries. (Mount Bethel is our #1!) There is also a restaurant on-site at Weiderkehr that serves semi-authentic German food. The food is a bit on the pricey side - but it is a nice dinner, and a cool experience as the restaurant is in an old wine cellar. If you have any questions about this spot, please ask! We've made this trip several times!

Orchards

We LOVE to pick apples and peaches! You can count on Riggs for having the best around! Peaches are in season from May to mid-August. Apples are usually around from Late-August through October. They also have blackberry and blueberry patches. You can take a look at their current offerings are www.riggsfamilyorchard.com

Local History

If you're a history buff, this is the place to be! The historic site in downtown Fort Smith is one of the more history-rich spots in the area. You can tour an old courthouse, walk the outline of a confederate fort wall, or take a look at old hanging gallows made famous by Judge Isaac Parker. To get the full effect, there is quite a bit of walking involved - so going in the heat of summer wouldn't be the best idea. There is also a small museum that spotlights the history of Fort Smith - it's at 320 Rogers Avenue. They have an old-fashioned Coca Cola fountain! If you work up an appetite, we would recommend Bricktown Brewery, Neumiers Rib Room, or La Huerta. All of these are within walking distance of the Historic Site.

Breweries

We love breweries. We usually plan our vacation around them. This is the newest brewery in Fort Smith. The beer is decent. They do have a seasonal watermelon beer that is awesome if you like sweet drinks!

We wouldn't necessarily classify this as a brewery, it's more a restaurant. But they do have beers that are unique to their name. So technically, a brewery. We love the Bluesberry, and the King Kolsch. The food is pretty awesome here as well.

This is a unique experience. A couple has a brewery on their farm that they operate out a small building adjacent to their garden. They typically have a small menu of farm-to-table / locally sourced food items. Their beer menu is experimental, and rarely consistent. The best beer I've had from them is the PB&J. Awesome food, really cool experience, and fantastic brews. We would recommend making the trip to County Monks Brewing at the Subiaco Abbey if you go to Prestonrose. They're in the same neighborhood!

This really is an experience. One of the oldest places in Arkansas - The Abbey as Subiaco - brews beer. There are monks on site at the monastery and brewing beer is a part of their practices. While I haven't tried their beer yet, I can tell you it is world class. Their small tasting room is only open on Saturdays. We would also recommend purchasing candles, hot sauce, and their peanut brittle.

Food scene

These are recommendations for the restaurants that are unique to Greenwood. We do have some fast food places - but we're assuming you have a solid grasp for their offerings.
This is our favorite of the two Mexican restaurants in Greenwood. The Pollo Loco is a home run!

This is a Chinese buffet restaurant with menu items as well. Lin previously owned a large Chinese restaurant in Fort Smith before relocating to Greenwood. We will say - most of the food is loaded with MSG... So if you do not want that sleepy feeling after you eat, try another spot.

The best coffee in the area is in Fort smith at the Fort Smith coffee company. Sarah enjoys their chais and Casey loves the hazlenut latte. All of their flavorings are home made and they roast their own beans on site! It's a great stop for a pastry/coffee!
