Hiking

San Martino is a small church perched on the mountain side above Griante, Lake Como (Lago di Como). It's official name is "Santuario Della Madonna delle Grazie di San Martino", but most everyone simply refers to it as San Martino. If you are in, near, or even just passing through Griante and the weather is clear, this is a place you must not miss - not so much for the church, which is pretty, but for the spectacular views of Lake Como that can be enjoyed both on the way up and once at the church. San Martino: Santuario Della Madonna delle Grazie di San Martino San Martino is a small church perched on the mountain side above Griante, Lake Como (Lago di Como). The hike, or more appropriately walk, to San Martino is relatively short at about 45 minutes up from Griante, or about 1 hour up from the shore of Lake Como. There are two paths that lead to San Martino. One starts from Rogaro, a large agricultural plain above Griante, the other begins at the northern edge of Griante just beyond the area of Griante known as Carsolina (download Map of Griante). Eventually they both meet, but the faster and easier route is the latter one that starts at Carsolina. Signs by the lake and also in Griante should point the way for you. Additionally, the church itself is visible from virtually every spot in Griante. But if you are not sure where you are going, just ask anyone on the street my simply saying "San Martino" and they will point you in the right direction. Bring a panino, some cheese, fruit, a bottle of wine, and have a picnic while taking in the view! There are a few steep sections, but the walk is along a well maintained and safe path that begins in the forest but quickly opens up offering excellent views of the lake. It is frequented by locals and tourists of all ages, but there are never crowds. A small chapel dedicated to the Alpini (Italian mountain soldiers) is reached at about half way up; it's is a perfect spot to take a break if you need one. Bring water as there is none at the top. There is a fountain in the village. If the weather is nice, bring a panino, some cheese, fruit and a bottle of wine and have a picnic while taking in the view. Once you arrive at the church of San Martino, you are rewarded with spectacular views of Lake Como. From the small plateau on which the church sits, you are able to see Bellagio (the town that occupies Lake Como's peninsula), the town of Griante directly below, and the large mountains that line the eastern shores of the Lake such as Legnone and the Grigne.

Brunate is an Italian town in the province of Como, located in the Lombardy region. One of its main attractions is the Volta Lighthouse, which was named after the great and famous physicist. The Lighthouse of Brunate was in fact built in 1927, on the centenary commemoration of Alessandro Volta’s death, who was born and died in Como. In that year, the city wanted to celebrate the anniversary in a big way, with an important national exposure. It was constituted a committee of honor under the patronage of King Vittorio Emanuele II and the presidency of Benito Mussolini, as well as an executive committee headed by Guglielmo Marconi. In addition to that, two buildings were built: the first one was the Volta Temple, which now houses most of the equipment once belonged to Volta, while the latter was the Volta Lighthouse itself. Located just below the summit of Mount Tre Croci, in San Maurizio, the Lighthouse was designed by engineer Gabriele Giussani, who also chose its particular location. It is a 29 meters high octagonal tower, with an internal spiral staircase of 143 steps. This stairs allows you to reach the two circular balconies: the first one is located just above the main entrance, while the second one is just outside the lantern. Both balconies offer a breathtaking view over the whole arc of the Western Alps, up to Monte Rosa. The lighthouse also offers a great view down to the Como Lake below, as well as on the adjacent towns of Chiasso and Cernobbio. On extremely clear days, you can even see the top of the Duomo di Milano. The Volta Lighthouse was inaugurated on September 8, 1927, in the presence of Costanzo Ciano, who was Minister of Telecommunications in Mussolini’s government at that time. Since then, every evening from sunset and throughout the night until dawn, its lantern alternately emits a green, white and red light. It is visible up to 50 miles away and it symbolizes a milestone in the journey of humanity: it is a reminder of the invention of the battery, the very first electric current generator. In the central room of the lighthouse, there is a bust of Volta, represented in old age, which is still present today. To access the Volta Lighthouse you shall take the funicular connecting Como to Brunate: the inauguration was in 1894 and it is active in many hours of the day.

Balcony of Italy One of the most beautiful places in Italy, elected "Place of the Heart" by the FAI, is the flagship of the Intelvi Valley. The Sighignola is a mountain of Lombardy Luganesi that extends between the territory of the Italian town of Lanzo d'Intelvi and the Swiss among the counties of Arogno and Lugano. Lanzo begins to reach the highest peak: the road is very windy and completely surrounded by woods. The balcony of Italy can only be reached by car from the Italian side. Just before you reach the summit you will come upon a launch area for gliding and hiking trails that vary according to difficulty. The buildings and infrastructure of Sighignola and the entire surrounding area date back to the period before the First World War, because the area was of strategic interest for defense systems, known as the "Cadorna Line" with the main purpose of defending the Italian border from a possible attack from the Swiss Confederation. At the end of the road there is a small chapel in memory of the soldiers who had fallen during the First World War and a panoramic terrace. The rooftop terrace (1320m) offers a spectacular view of Lake Lugano and the surrounding area and has been called "the balcony of Italy": in fact, on a sunny day you can see almost all of Lake Lugano and the mountains, some over 4000 m high, forming the Alpine range, including Monte Rosa and the famed Matterhorn. Newly built, is a terrace in Swiss territory, with children's playground, a barbecue area and benches to admire the beautiful view. For sports enthusiasts and lovers of hiking there are several paths to choose from. For example one of the most popular routes starts from Lanzo d'Intelvi and connects Mount Caprino to Sighignola, along which you can enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Lugano, the city of Lugano and the nearby mountains such as Monte Bre and San Salvatore . Along the way, you can stop at typical restaurants of Ticino.

The Sacro Monte di Ossuccio (literally "Sacred Mount of Ossuccio") is one of the nine sacri monti in the Italian regions of Lombardy and Piedmont, in northern Italy, which were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2003. The devotional complex is located on a prealpine crag some 200 metres above the western shore Lake Como, facing Isola Comacina and some 25 km from the city of Como. Surrounded by olive groves and woodland, it is quite isolated from other buildings. The fourteen chapels, constructed between 1635 and 1710 in the typical Baroque style reflecting the Counter Reformation ethos of the sacri monti movement, are joined by a path which leads up to a pre-existing sanctuary of 1532 placed on the summit and dedicated to La Beata Vergine del Soccorso.

www.swissminiatur.ch/swissminiatur/en/ If you want to have an overview of Switzerland and spend a nice time in a wonderful region, do not miss Swissminiatur, an exciting place and a must see attraction for everyone visiting Switzerland. Swissminiatur was inaugurated on 6th June 1959 and this year it celebrates the 60 year’s anniversary. It is an open-air miniature park located in Melide, on the shore of Lake Lugano, in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. The park is surrounded by mountains like Monte Generoso, Monte San Salvatore and Monte San Giorgio, which has been declared an UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. In an area of 14,000 m2 visitors can admire more than 120 models at scale of 1:25 which represent the most important buildings, monuments and transportation means in Switzerland. A 3,560m long model railway with 18 trains runs through the park. It is fascinating to watch the variety of trains that run along the tracks, cross bridges and stop by at stations. Boats are also in motion on the lakes, cable cars and funiculars go up and down the mountains and cars move along the highway. For garden lovers, the whole park is beautifully decorated with a selection of 1,500 different plants and over 15,000 flowers. There are several coin operated rides for children.

Restaurants

With its shady terrace jutting out over the water, this is about the most romantic spot you could choose to eat around the Cadenabbia area. Marianna cooks by theme, so if Friday is lake-fish day (with fish rilettes, smoked-lavarello tagliolini and trout), Thursday is garden day, with lots of vegies. The servings are copious and of good quality, and there's no pretence at going beyond a down-home feel. The restaurant is about 2.5km northeast of Tremezzo and about 600m north of the Cadenabbia ferry stop.

This panoramic, rustic spot in the hills above Tremezzo is a meat-lover's paradise. You'll find game, steak, and lakefish—but not a single pasta dish on the menu. (Although fear not, carb fans, you can order polenta.) Family-run and intimate, La Fagurida serves traditional country fare and cucina di montagna (mountain cuisine) in a charming, farmhouse-style dining room filled with copper pots or on a terrace with sweeping views over Tremezzo and the lake. Hearty fare includes roast rabbit, fiorentina (T-bone) steaks, lavarello burro e salvia (a trout-like lakefish with butter and sage), plus polenta uncia (with gorgonzola, butter, garlic, and sage), simple grilled vegetables, and appetizers of cured local meats. All of this is served with excellent wines that are stored in the restaurant's vaulted stone cellar, which you can take a peek at if you ask. Note that you'll need a car to get here, but the drive—along a winding, scenic road—is half the fun. You can walk from Tremezzo, but it is a hike. After your meal, work off some of that rich food with a walk into the cute hamlet of Rogaro, a few minutes down the road
