This is my husband's business. The ideal place for a coffee break, while visiting Kraton Yogyakarta. The coffee shop is not far from Taman Sari or Water Castle. Among their specialities (sultan tea or spice coffee), they serve the most expensive coffee in the world, aka kopi loewak or luwak coffee. If you want to try it and know it all about its rare production process (yes, the coffee beans have actually been pooped by an animal called luwak), just follow the signs leading you there, or ask us for the directions.

Sightseeing

Another of the temples in Yogya. It is on a hill, so it is the perfect place to go and see a sunset from its top. No entrance fee. Better go during the dry season, as it usually rains in the evenings during the raining one.

Parks & Nature

Gunung Kidul beaches are at a 2-hour motorbike ride from Yogya. They absolutely amazing. They look like the ones in Lombok (with a big rock in front of the beach), there is usually nobody there (just local tourists), and no foreigners. You can eat there fresh fish and seafood for a cheap price. We have a friend there who has a very simple and basic homestay, in case you want to spend the night there. DO NOT GO THERE ON SUNDAYS, as it is crowded with buses of Indonesian tourists.

Arts & Culture

You can see there every night (except for Sundays) a performance of wayang kulit, the traditional shadow puppets. The show is shorter, for tourists. Gambelan music is played live!!

You can see every night performances of Ramayana Ballet, the great opera-ballet which is the base of the Indonesian culture, telling a Hindu story itself. Gambelan orchestra plays live music too. You can see the performance after having a delicious traditional fine meal at the gazebos outside.

Kraton Yogyakarta is the Sultan Palace (nowadays we got the number 10), and the surrounding neighbourhood. Everybody living or working there are members of the royal family. You can visit the Water Palace, the Underground Mosquee and other historical buildings. The best is to take a local guide: for only 50.000rp he can tell you all the secrets. You can also see the artisans' ateliers, where they produce batik and wayang kulit. If you have time, visit the Sultan Palace, though maybe it only worths it to see the puppet performances or the traditional dancings. Ah, and you can try the most expensive coffee in the world, the luwak coffee. Nono, my husband, has a coffeeshop there, near the Water Palace. Heiho Kopi Loewak is the place name. Just follow the signs that lead you there.

Shopping

This shop is the first building in Jalan Malioboro, near the Kraton. It is right in front of Beringharjo Market. You will find all kind of souvenirs and clothes, at very good prices, and there is no need to bargain. Plus they have AC and no sellers will come to bother you. At the top of the building, there is café-restaurant. Why is this place so special? Because the owner works in a bank, but he sometimes gets transvestite into a Javanese lady. Most of the staff there are gays, and on Friday evenings you can see a drag queen cabaret. It is a big exception in a place as Muslim as Java.
