Sightseeing

The Bairro Alto is an old and picturesque neighborhood in central Lisbon, with narrow cobbled streets, centuries-old houses, small traditional shops, bars, restaurants and Fado houses. Rua da Atalaia, Rua do Diário de Noticias and Rua da Barroca become filled with caipirinha-sipping crowds, most under 40, but mixing different urban tribes, straight and gay. It's a place inhabited by old ladies and young artsy hipsters, giving it a vibe that is simultaneously old-fashioned and avant-garde, a shabby-chic neighborhood that really needs no name. It's simply the "bairro," the neighborhood where everything happens -- at night.

Principe Real is currently the hottest neighborhood in Lisbon. It’s where more and more independent boutiques are opening, and where you find the monumental Embaixada and EntreTanto concept stores. It also has some of the trendiest spots for a drink or meal at any time of the day, such as the Lost In terrace, O Prego da Peixaria, A Cevicheria and Zero Zero, or the cafés and restaurants in and around Praça das Flores.

Who would have imagined that an abandoned industrial space outside the heart of the city would become one of the places to be in Lisbon? It was first taken over by small businesses and creative professionals, then came the shops and cafés, and even a small market on Sundays. Now many pass by in the evening, stepping into the curious bookshop Ler Devagar or into Landeau for its mouthwatering chocolate cake. Later at night, it’s time for dinner at 1300 Taberna, A Praça, or Rio Maravilha.

The former red light district now competes with Bairro Alto as the main nightlife destination. Rua Nova do Carvalho (now also known as Pink Street for the color of the pavement) mixes crowds of all ages and backgrounds, on the terraces or inside the bar Pensão Amor. Parks & Nature

This modest garden-park, laid out in 1860, is the centre point of the city's elegantly affluent Príncipe Real neighborhood. Locals gather here for the serene setting and the cooling shade. An open-air café and children's play area offer pleasant distraction, but the highlight is a huge cedar tree, the flattened branches of which have been trained on a trellis, creating a huge, natural "umbrella".

Arguably the prettiest of Lisbon's public green spaces, the Estrela gardens are attractive any time of year but it's during the warm summer months that the park is at its vibrant and most colorful. A lake teeming with ducks and geese is overlooked by a waterfront cafe, a favorite meeting point for residents, especially at weekends when an arts and crafts fair threads its way along the grounds. The well-maintained lawns are natural picnic sites while the adjacent adventure playground keeps smiling youngsters occupied. An refurbished 19th-century wrought-iron bandstand is still used today as an ad-hoc concert stage and there's an open air library for bookworms and anybody looking to improve their Portuguese.

Set along the northwestern edge of Parque Eduardo VII, these three estufas (glasshouses) date from 1933 and make for a pleasant diversion away from the bustle of the city. The estufa fria (cool greenhouse) is filled with shimmering tree ferns and striking camellias, among other brilliant flora. The tropical trees and plants are landscaped around a series of ponds and waterfalls in much the same way as the more exotic greenery in the estufa quente (hot greenhouse). Here, coffee and mango trees flourish in the sticky heat. The smaller estufa doce (sweet greenhouse) bristles with prickly cacti and other succulents. Overhead, lofty palms at least one hundred years old provide welcome shade.

Best custard tarts (Pastel de nata) in Lisbon. A small space with an Art Nouveau façade facing Camões Square, that was once part of a butter shop, has reopened as a "custard tarts factory." Not only great food but also a hotspot in town. Arrive early to secure a table as the restaurant does not take bookings. Only 12 minutes walking from the apartment, towards Principe Real. A giant octopus hanging from the ceiling draws the attention of passers-by on the street, and it’s an indication of what’s served inside -- ceviche. This traditional Peruvian dish made of raw fish (salmon, octopus or shrimp) cured in lemon or lime juice, also has a Portuguese version here -- with cod. Alternatively, there are tacos and empanadas, and even a tasting menu so you may try several dishes. To wash it all down, there’s pisco sour, a drink also from Peru.

One of the best restaurants in Chiado to eat fresh fish! A short walk from the apartment. We recommend booking in advance. For years it was located by the beach of Comporta in the Troia peninsula, and was renowned for the freshness of its fish. That freshness and cooked-to-perfection standards were maintained with the move to the center of Lisbon, and the fish comes straight from the ocean, not fish farms. The bright dining area is simple and relaxed.

Found at the top of an 1800s building facing one of the city's most beautiful lookout points, this bar and restaurant offers one of the most beautiful views of Lisbon. An old elevator takes you to the top, and the tables are spread over an interior dining area and a terrace. Inside, for rainy days, is a counter with exclusive dishes that aren't served at the tables. That's where the cocktails are also made and where you may watch the chef in action. The menu is inspired by Portuguese cuisine and is quite original. For the pre-dinner hours, you may simply order a drink.

As for the singing, it doesn't get much better: the restaurant's esteemed roll call of artists include Maria da Fe, Aldina Duarte, Francisco Salvacao Barreto and Joana Amendoeira. Senhor Vinho is particularly geared towards groups so advance booking is advised.
Mario Pacheco, an accomplished guitarist who's played with the best of them, including Camane, Ana Sofia Varela and Mariza, owns this beautiful and revered establishment. The club is one of the best venues in Lisbon to hear professional fado, and over the years has attracted Portugal's most celebrated fadistas. The building is centuries old. Guests dine under a vaulted ceiling of brick stone, and in one corner of the room an original Moorish well still stands. Between courses diners are regaled to the haunting strains of Portugal's most emblematic musical style, delivered by male and female singers, depending on the programme. The club's reputation is such that along with portraits of the performers there are dozens of photographs decorating the walls of VIP guests shaking hands with a proud Mario.

A former guesthouse where ladies of the world’s oldest profession got together with sailors is now one of the most popular bars in town. This is due to a naughty and relaxed atmosphere, but also to a décor recalling the history of the building. The ceilings were painted with frescoes, the walls are covered with mirrors, paintings and old posters, and decorative pieces give the space an old burlesque atmosphere spread through several rooms.

This pub is inspired by the British gastropubs, meaning it serves meals in addition to drinks. The dimly-lit space, which has maintained the original 18th-century arches, is welcoming, with a décor made up of restored mirrors and chandeliers. Three TVs show football (soccer) games, rugby, cricket or golf, following the English tradition.

An old pharmacy is now a wine bar with about 160 local varieties. It's arguably the most beautiful and welcoming bar in Bairro Alto, with a décor that maintains much of its past -- the cabinets formerly displaying medication are now filled with bottles illuminated by dim lighting. With such an inviting interior it's not surprising that it attracts tourists and locals who stay not just for the wines but also for the cheeses and meats served at barrels turned into tables. A second smaller room next door has a similar ambience but this time with a décor made up of Indian crafts and with the possibility of also drinking tea.

The commercial centre houses 54 shops, and there are 12 restaurants gathered together on the top floor food hall. The anchor department store is photography, sound and video retailer FNAC. A desk near the entrance sells concert and theatre tickets and is a good place to find out what kind of live entertainment the city is hosting.

For one of the most original souvenirs of any trip to Lisbon, breeze down to this little cornershop in the city's Baixa (downtown) district and buy a tin of tuna. Not any old tin but one packaged in great retro wrapping. Established over 80 years ago, this family-run business has been selling tins of tuna and other fish and seafood since the early 1930s. The retro wrapping features graphic design from the 1940s faithfully reproduced as if you were shopping during the same period. The range of sardines is especially delicious garnished variously in lemon, oregano, garlic and even curry. There's also tinned octopus, anchovy, mackerel, mussel and cod for sale. On most days you can watch the elderly female staff applying the wrapping to their wares

The salons in the 18th-century neo-Moorish palace located in the city's trendy Principe Real district have been transformed into a series of attractive boutiques, each selling a different range of independent fashion, eco-friendly cosmetics, handmade jewelry and chic interior decor, most of it created by Portuguese designers. The former palace building has been completely refurbished and the stores occupy two floors. Access is gained via a grand marble staircase and much of the Art Nouveau detail has been carefully preserved. Temporary art exhibitions are held here on a regular basis to add even more vibrancy to an already creative environment.

If you're after an original souvenir of Portugal, this absorbing handicraft-hardware store is probably where you'll find it. Items on sale here are represented by brands that have been manufactured in the country for generations, and the inventory lists some of the nation's most cherished goods. There are fragrant soaps from Brito/Claus Porto (Oprah raved about them on her show) displayed in colorful and stylish retro wrapping paper, and Benamor Cream boxed in similarly eye-catching designs. For the kitchen, look out for the aromatic vinegars from Moura Alves and gourmet sea salt (Flor de Sal) from the Algarve. There are also toiletries, stationary, books, toys and even jewelry, all uniquely Portuguese and with a provenance that stretches back centuries.

It looks like any regular supermarket but the difference is that here everything is organic. The demand for healthier and eco-friendly products led to the success of the Brio stores, and those looking for a light meal may head to the adjoining Origem cafeteria in Chiado's branch. Options include salads, sandwiches, quiches, desserts and more, to be enjoyed indoors or at the tables outside.
