The Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center is a vast area of 421 acres that includes exhibits, a classroom, a large pavilion, native wildlife, native plants, archery, and hiking trails. It is a designated Arkansas Watchable Wildlife site, with well over 100 species of birds and practically every common Ozark mammal recorded. Visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars and cameras to capture the beautiful scenery. The hiking trails span almost six miles and include the Creek Bottom Trail, a 2-mile loop on the floodplain providing easy access to the creek for fishing or wildlife watching, the Woodland Edge Trail, a 1-mile loop that is wheelchair accessible for 0.6 miles, the Creek Bluff Trail overlooking Crooked Creek for 0.9 miles, and the Woodland Stream Trail that courses 0.6 miles of Ozark forest along a picturesque Crooked Creek tributary. The 3-D archery range at the center offers a challenge to beginners and advanced archers alike, and even non-archers can enjoy the wildlife-viewing opportunities along the course. The course is open Tuesday through Saturday by appointment only, and visitors must stop by the center to check-in and for directions to the range. The property is gated and closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's holidays, so it is a good idea to call ahead unless you are planning a self-guided visit of the area. Visitors may access walking trails from the parking lot daily from sunrise to sunset, but additional trail information and events should be confirmed by calling ahead.
