Gallery

Thanks to the permanent photo exhibition "A Journey to Ios" by the German photographer Christian Diner, Ios now has its first photo gallery museum in its history. The artistic photos bring to life the people who have shaped the history of Ios in recent decades. The gallery is located in a traditional house in the village, which was renovated in collaboration with the Municipality.

Introduction

Sustainable tourism is defined as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities” (The World Tourism Organization). Sustainable tourism can preserve the natural environment and heritage of Ios whilst also maintaining the island as a destination for travellers from all over the world.

Accommodation Advice

While all inclusive resorts create employment, they leave little behind to the local community of Ios. These resorts are often owned by overseas companies and do little to promote local services, crafts and entertainment. Beaches are sometimes reserved exclusively for their guests – fenced off and protected by security guards, with local people being denied access. They attempt to offset this negative criticism by paying social media 'influencers' and by 'green-washing' or falsely touting their environmental credentials.
