In an area that is overrun with posh cheese shops and expensive restaurants, it's nice to have a pub like The Castle. This place is down to earth and decisively 'pubby' - green tiles line the outside walls and an ornate wooden bar waits within. The beer selection here is strong and while the food menu is nothing exceptional, we enjoyed their classic Sunday roast.

Tucked away on a very chilled residential street, Ladbroke Arms is the kind of unassuming neighbourhood boozer perfect for a break from the hustle. Inside it's a country tip: heavy woods, patterned wallpaper and deep dark ales. Perhaps the kind of place you'd meet in before you went on a fox hunt. Jk - it would be after the fox hunt, when their huge wine list would help ease the guilt.
As for the food, the grub on offer here better reflects that of a restaurant than a pub, and although it's not cheap, you'll understand why after one bite of your roasted cod with Israeli couscous, tomatoes, olives, coriander & lemon oil.

Light and intimate, this neighbourhood restaurant puts the focus on fresh food, good wine and simple ingredients. If you can get beyond the brow-raising prices, it's a great spot for a first date.
The pork chop with anchovy and rosemary dressing is a beautifully simple dish, served so as to emphasise the quality of the meat. Equally good is the onglet (a traditionally French cut of beef) which comes served with with fresh artichokes and parmesan. For the full experience, ask for pairing advice when ordering from the extensive wine list.

But Venison steak with orange marmalade jus, braised red cabbage & heritage potatoes is gonna cost you pal, especially when the quality is excellent and portion sizes generous. When you throw in a heated beer garden, it's no surprise that

That means super low doorways, beautiful dark wood everywhere and cosy little cubbyholes featuring a sherry bar, a roaring fire and jovial west Londoners sipping on ales.

That's what Lord Frederic Leighton did - and the rest of his pad is just as impressive. The artist and nobleman built this house as a giant display case for all the treasures accumulated from his trips around the world. It's a lavish space, filled with gilded accents, marble pillars, dramatic staircases, and priceless art. Pretty good for London real estate...
