Sightseeing

An unsealed trail leads down to the beach, winding through bush until it reaches the beach. The beach is beautiful and quiet, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the sand and waves. At the end of the track, you come out at Moonee Beach, an 800m long sandy beach with rock platforms at each end. At 800m long, there is plenty of room for everyone, so it’s unlikely to get crowded. The beach is not patrolled so do be careful. It is a great surfing and the North end of the beach is a great fishing spot. Rock Platform The rock platform on the north end of the beach is where you will find the pink cave. Access to the cave is only safe at low tide, so make sure you check tide times before you go. Walking across the rock platform can be slippery, so have good footwear and take care. On your 700m walk to the cave, take time to look at some of the wonderful rock pools, as some are very colourful. Also look at the algae and seaweed growing on the exposed rocks, many of them are also brightly colored. The Pink Cave Remember to only go here at low tide, because this is the safest period, as well as ensuring you see the pink rocks. The rocks are wet and slippery, because the cave is tidal, so take care. Inside the cave, where the waves wash in, you will see the amazing pink rocks. Fully exposed at low tide, they make a great sight. Monee Beach Track Monee Beach track at the North End takes you towards Middle Camp Beach. At the end of the trail you end up with a stunning view of Catherine Hill Bays picturesque coal loader Jetty. To the South end of the Beach is a large rock platform, Flat Island Ghosties Beach where you will find The Rainbow Cave. Rock Pools On the walk to the rock pools you will find a host of rock pools teaming with sea life. There is a large Rock Pool just before Flat Island that is constantly flushed by the ocean but is completely calm and sheltered from the waves. During the warmer months this area of the ocean walms up more making it a pleasant swim. The water is shallow at first but drops off quickly so best to swim with the kids. The rock edge adjoining these Rock Pools is a great spot for fishing but you will need to make sure you have a life vest and carefully consider the dangers of rock fishing. You will find Black Drummer, Snapper, Bream, Australian Salmon and Flathead to name a few fish. Flat Island Just past the Rock Pool is Flat Island. Although it isn’t actually an island it is a striking grassy peninsula jetting out to the beach. You can walk right to the edge. It’s a great viewing spot. Ghostoes beach is only accessible via Monee Beach past the Rock Pools.

Ghosties Beach is to the south of Moonee Beach, which is an enjoyable walk, being 1600m to the cave entrance. At the south end of Moonee Beach is Flat Rocks Point, which has some interesting rock formations near the water’s edge. Walk over the sand dunes and down to Ghosties on the other side. Here you will find a lovely, secluded beach, with tree covered cliffs. One section of the beach has green algae covered boulders, which look amazing. Next to the boulders, is a small rock outcrop has a coal seam exposed, with its black colour contrasting to the yellow sand. The Rainbow Cave A fissure in the cliff at the south end of the beach marks the entrance to the Rainbow Cave, making it easy to find. Only access the cave at low tide, otherwise it is too dangerous to enter. Check the tide times before you go, to make sure the tide it low. The fissure leads into a sea cave with amazing rock colours, because of the way they have been eroded. From inside the cave, you are able to look out of the sea cave over the ocean and the nearby cliffs.

City/town information

Affectionately known as “catho” by locals, Catherine Hill Bay is one of those towns that is timelessly Australian. Named after the schooner “Catherine Hill” which ran aground on the beach in 1867, coal was discovered here soon after. In 1873 the mine opened, serviced by a giant ocean jetty hauling coal to waiting ships. Local coal miners formed a surf club at the beach in 1928 that is still in operation today and it was one of the first beaches ‘discovered’ by Sydney surfers in the late 1950s. Whilst Catherine Hill Bay is a State Heritage Listed historic former mining village featuring a stunning patrolled beach (Middle Camp beach), named twice as one of 'Australia's 101 Best Beaches'. Popular for swimming, surfing and fishing, the beach also features an iconic former coal-loading jetty, evidence of the area's mining history and a popular photography spot. Casa de Mare is between two ocean beaches (Monee beach and Middle Camp beach) and hugged by vast national parks making it the perfect spot to explore these beautiful beaches or hike to the surrounding beaches from Ghosties Beach, Timber Beach, Coral Fern Beach, Bongon Beach to Fraser Beach. It depends on how long you want to bush walk. These beaches are not patrolled but there are a number of safe rock pools along the way. Monee beach is directly accessible via the back of the property and is about a 5 min walk via Monee Beach trail. Middle Camp beach which is a < 5 min drive and is patrolled.
