In honor of social and environmental responsibility, we have created a sustainable retreat experience where travelers can rest assured their holiday leaves a footprint only in the sand.
Located in the south-western part of Sumba in a beachside village named Kerewe (30-minute drive from Nihi Sumba), Alamayah’s surrounding area offers an abundance of gifts to travelers searching for raw and untouched destinations. Cultural experiences include visiting traditional tribes and villages, exploring megalithic stone tombs, and witnessing pre-historic rituals. Perhaps most unique is the exciting custom known as Pasola jousting festival, where once a year, hundreds of warriors on horseback charge into each other hurling spears to appease the Marapu and ensure a good harvest. This festival, usually held between February and March, is believed to bring fertility to the land.
With a passion for wellness practice, our spaces and experiences have been intentionally designed, creating a holistic holiday retreat where every guest is cared for with heartfelt hospitality. Our daily programs are magnified by Sumba’s magnificent landscape, providing a vacation grounded in rest, nourishment and discovery.
With the understanding that mental health is directly related to gut health, we offer Conscious Cuisine; a farm-to-table menu packed with synbiotics, alkalinity, enzymatic activity, and hydration. Our plant-based menu embodies health and sustainability both ethically and environmentally. A rainbow rich in trace minerals, vitamins and phytonutrients, our cuisine effortlessly proves how delightfully delicious healing foods are.
Discover the culinary masterpieces created by our Executive Chef, Diego Gimeno. A plant-based advocate, Diego began his culinary journey as a child shadowing his grandmother, a professional chef, in their home’s kitchen. To date, Diego has helped establish some of the world’s most innovative & rule-breaking Michelin restaurants. His passion for the wilderness led Diego to Alamayah, where he finds solace in foraging Sumba’s land and sea, sourcing fresh and seasonal ingredients from our local village Kerewe and beyond.
Herbs, fruits, vegetables and edible flowers are grown by our local farmers in neighbouring plantations, in Alamayah’s landscaping, and in our organic permaculture gardens. Our culinary creations showcase indigenous Sumbanese ingredients and are influenced by our chef’s Michelin standard. Feast with our wonderfully eclectic array of dishes that may become the highlight of your Alamayah experience.
Inspired by traditional apothecary potions, our collection of homemade elixirs, foraged garnishes, and top-shelf liqueurs are reminiscent of a traditional folk healers' satchel of remedies. We at Alamayah have collaborated with a renowned botanical bartender for the curation of a cocktail & mocktail menu that consists of concentrated tinctures, bitters and tonics. Our mixologists today utilize ancient root, flower and herbal remedies for a drink with a purpose: ultimate health and wellbeing.
Heal from the inside with our array of medicinal teas and tonics, served throughout the day. Farm-to-table cuisine is consciously cultivated by our chef specializing in holistic nutrition; and cocktails are therapeutic, curated by our herbal mixologist from indigenous healing botanicals. Hike some of Sumba’s most picturesque trails. Try mountain biking or snorkeling. Learn to garden in our permaculture farm or practice sunrise yoga on the rooftop. Sink into an Ayurvedic massage and then surf under the Sumba sun. Visit a local village and watch the intricate and meditative process of ikat weaving.
Hidden in the jungle beachside village in South Western Sumba, we offer heartfelt hospitality that feels like home. Above all Alamayah is place for true connection. Wifi is limited to certain hours of the day so our guests can unplug to reconnect with themselves, with their loved ones and with grandmother nature. Alamayah is a place that nurtures subtle, transformative experiences, leaving our guests inspired, empowered, and in a state of pure joy and love.
